Lunch Wrap: ASX in the green but Coles and Catalyst cop a hiding.

Lunch Wrap: ASX in the green but Coles and Catalyst cop a hiding. * ASX was up this morning as retailers rebound * Coles cops an 11% beating as sales disappoint * Wall Street's AI party turns into a hangover The S&P/ASX 200 was charging 0.5% higher by lunchtime in Sydney. And after yesterday's retail massacre, bargain hunters were back rummaging through the wreckage. Overnight, Wall Street had a shocker as Google parent Alphabet crashed more than 12%, vaporising over US$500 billion after disappointing earnings. Back home this morning, the real action was in consumer discretionary, which jumped higher after four straight days of punishment. But consumer staples were having a stinker, thanks to Coles Group (ASX:COL). Coles plunged as much as 11% after warning first-half supermarket earnings would be flat, rather than growing as analysts expected. Its supermarket sales rose just 3.6%, versus Woolworths (ASX:WOW)'s 6.1%, while liquor sales fell 1.3%. Coles blamed fierce discounting, stretched shoppers and rising fuel costs. It's now rolling out more promotions to win customers back. In other large cap news... Dan Murphy's owner Endeavour Group (ASX:EDV) managed to squeeze out a 2.8% lift in quarterly sales to $3.18 billion, although even Aussies are starting to think twice before stocking the beer fridge. Over at Reece (ASX:REH), things were flowing rather nicely. The plumbing giant shot up 7% after quarterly sales rose 4.3% to $2.51 billion. Turns out there's still plenty of money to be made selling taps and toilets, even when the rest of the economy looks a little constipated. Sleep machine maker ResMed (ASX:RMD) was also having a good one, rising 3% after net income climbed 12% to US$418 million. Demand for its sleep apnoea gear remains strong, while bigger share buybacks gave investors another reason to rest easy. Meanwhile, Car Group (ASX:CAR) was busy telling investors that AI wasn't about to steal its lunch money. The carsales owner reckons its 52 million-plus monthly users, massive dealer network and two decades of pricing data give it a pretty decent moat. Over in energy, Origin Energy (ASX:ORG) was laughing all the way to the bank after quarterly LNG revenue jumped 32% to $2.6 billion. It wasn't pumping out heaps more gas, mind you. It was simply getting paid more for what it sold. Sometimes the easiest way to make more money is to charge more. QatarEnergy, from one of the world's biggest gas-exporting nations, has signed up to buy as much as three million tonnes of LNG a year from Woodside's Louisiana project for 20 years, starting in 2029. Yep, Qatar buying American gas. That's a little like a bakery shop popping over next door to buy a loaf of bread. Over in mining, Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO) had a headache after seismic activity forced it to suspend underground operations at its giant Oyu Tolgoi copper mine in Mongolia. Three workers were injured, while transport delays at the Chinese border added to the drama. Not ideal when copper is supposed to be one of Rio's big growth engines. Its shares crashed 22% after quarterly gold production tumbled 30% to 22,200 ounces, costs went through the roof and FY27 production guidance was chopped to 90,000-105,000 ounces. To make matters worse, first production from two new mines has been pushed into FY28. Catalyst still has $371 million sitting in cash and bullion, which is a pretty decent cushion. And finally... Emerald Resources (ASX:EMR) also had a quarter it probably wouldn't be framing for the meeting room wall. Gold production fell 25% and costs jumped 48% as it processed lower-grade ore. Still, Emerald stuck with its FY27 guidance and had $540.9 million in liquid assets. ASX leaders. Aussie shares track strong weekly finish, Coles tumbles.

Aussie shares track strong weekly finish, Coles tumbles. Adrian BlackAAP 29 October 2026, 7:16pm Australia's share market is on track for its best weekly performance since July, shrugging off a Wall Street slump as local bank stocks continue their comeback. The S&P/ASX200 rose 94.3 points by midday, up 1.06 per cent, to 8986.4, as the broader All Ordinaries improved by 89.2 points, or 0.99 per cent, to 9101.8. The heavyweight financials sector provided much of the momentum, as investors sought safety in Australia's banks after US tech earnings raised questions about artificial intelligence's projected returns. "Wall Street turned decidedly sour as investors penalised tech heavyweights for aggressive spending and elusive pay-offs," Moomoo chief market strategist Tapas Strickland said. "Google parent Alphabet suffered its steepest single-day decline in company history, tumbling 12.6 per cent." CommBank was the best of the big four banks, up 1.6 per cent to $169 per share. There were signs of institutional buying across much of the market, with blue-chip names like Wesfarmers, Woolworths, and Transurban receiving healthy share price injections. Origin was another strong performer, but its more than two per cent push came after its revenue soared in the first quarter on the back of strong LNG prices. Coles was a notable exception, tumbling almost seven per cent top $21.85 after its $11.2 billion first-quarter sales disappointed investors. The energy sector climbed 0.9 per cent despite a continued retreat in oil prices after reports US officials were seeking talks with Iran. Again, bigger names in the segment were finding buyers, with Woodside, Santos, Yancoal and New Hope Corporation providing most of the support. Mining stocks were heavy, coming into a second session of losses after rebounding earlier in the week. BHP traded flat at $57.52, while Rio and Fortescue lost ground as copper prices reversed and iron ore futures lingered just below $US91 a barrel. Precious metals producers were also under pressure, as spot gold eased to $US4004 ($5699) an ounce. Consumer cyclicals have rebounded strongly with a 2.5 per cent advance, helping it recoup some of the previous four sessions' losses. Bitcoin has tumbled more than 5.5 per cent in the past two days to $US77,000 ($A109,605) after a suspected hack at major cryptocurrency exchange Binance. In company news, sleep device maker Resmed's revenue lifted six per cent in the September quarter to $US418 million ($595 million), beating out forecasts. Reece also posted strong results, with the plumbing goods supplier's shares jumping almost 10 per cent after first-quarter sales of $2.5 billion, up 4.3 per cent on the equivalent quarter. Star Entertainment shares are trading 3.5 per cent higher after the casino group came out of a trading halt, following reports its $260 million Federal Court fine for money laundering obligation breaches will be paid off in instalments. The Australian dollar is buying 70.26 US cents, down from 70.47 US cents on Thursday at 5pm.

Would I buy ResMed shares after today's results?

Would I buy ResMed shares after today's results? The company has reported solid revenue and earnings growth. Here's what I make of its performance and current valuation. Published October 30, 11:47 am AEDT ResMed Inc (ASX: RMD) shares are having a positive finish to the week. Shares in the sleep technology giant are up 2% to around $36.15 on Friday, following the release of the company's first-quarter results. But are the results good enough to make ResMed shares a buy at current levels? What did ResMed report? According to its ASX announcement, ResMed delivered a solid start to FY27, reporting a 6% increase in revenue to US$1.41 billion for the first quarter. On a core constant currency basis, revenue growth was slightly stronger at 7%. Demand for its sleep and breathing health products remained healthy, with global sleep device revenue increasing 9% and masks and other products growing 10%. I think these are encouraging numbers. There was also good news on profitability. The company's adjusted gross margin improved by 50 basis points to 62.5%, helped by ongoing productivity improvements. This contributed to a 14% increase in adjusted earnings per share (EPS), comfortably ahead of revenue growth. As for the outlook, management maintained its FY27 guidance. ResMed continues to expect reported revenue of US$5.75 billion to US$5.85 billion, with core constant currency revenue growth of 5% to 7%. Its adjusted earnings guidance was also left unchanged. I think ResMed's first-quarter performance provides a solid start towards achieving those targets. Would I buy ResMed shares? I am positive on ResMed's long-term prospects, and today's results have reinforced that view. The company has an excellent position in the global sleep health market, supported by its established brand, extensive product range, and continued investment in innovation. Importantly, there is still a substantial opportunity to grow. Millions of people around the world are living with undiagnosed or untreated obstructive sleep apnoea, and I expect awareness and access to treatment to improve over time. ResMed is well placed to benefit from this trend, especially as it continues expanding internationally and developing new products. I also like the company's focus on improving efficiency, which could allow earnings to grow faster than revenue over the coming years. And what about its valuation? Based on CommSec consensus forecasts at 30 October, ResMed shares are trading on a forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of approximately 21.3 times FY27 earnings. That reduces to 19.4 times for FY28, then to 17.5 times for FY29. It is also possible that consensus EPS estimates could change for the better following the company's encouraging start to the year, lowering these multiples a touch. Of course, investors should keep in mind that this valuation assumes ResMed continues delivering earnings growth. Any slowdown or pressure on profitability could weigh on its share price. Nevertheless, I think the current multiples look reasonable for a business with ResMed's market position and long-term growth opportunities. Foolish takeaway. Today's results have given me another reason to feel confident about ResMed shares. The company continues to grow, its profitability is improving, and there is still a substantial global market for its products. At around $36.15, I think ResMed shares offer good value for long-term investors. In light of this, I would be happy to buy and give the company plenty of time to grow.

Ozlo raises $22M Series B led by Modi Ventures as sleepbuds hit 260,000 customers

Sleep technology company Ozlo has raised $22 million in Series B funding led by Modi Ventures. The round includes previously issued convertible instruments, and existing investors such as LifeArc, Artis Ventures, and Resmed took part. The Boston-based maker of Ozlo Sleepbuds has passed 260,000 customers in under two years. It will use the money to grow globally, invest in hardware, software, and research, and move beyond earbuds into broader sleep and nighttime health. That includes regulatory work to submit a tinnitus product to the US Food and Drug Administration for review. Ozlo also partners with Dreem Health, a virtual sleep clinic, to connect users with sleep specialists. In July 2026, it launched Sleepbuds 2, with up to 14 hours of battery life.
