About the Job

Requirements

  • A PhD in Physics, Engineering, or equivalent is required.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on semiconductor or photonics fabrication process experience in industry, a lab, or a foundry is required.
  • Expertise in electron-beam lithography, inductively coupled plasma reactive-ion etching, plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition, thermal evaporation, scanning electron microscopy, and other typical metrology tools is required.
  • Experience working with measurement stages, optical and electrical probe alignment, and data management is required.
  • Strong fundamentals in process engineering, including process control, recipe development, and documentation discipline, are required.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex process issues end-to-end is required.
  • Comfort working in a fast-moving, flexible environment with high ownership is required.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, own, and improve end-to-end photonics process flows, including process integration, recipe development, and yield improvement.
  • Run and refine core cleanroom steps as applicable, including photolithography or electron-beam lithography, etching, deposition, lift-off, cleaning, and annealing.
  • Establish robust process windows, controls, and documentation.
  • Drive metrology and feedback loops using profilometry, ellipsometry, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, optical inspection, and related methods to correlate process with device performance.
  • Collaborate across fabrication, design, and characterization to improve performance, repeatability, and manufacturability.
  • Run post-fabrication test and characterization flows to measure design performance.

About the Company

Lumina

Develops PICs and electro-optic modulators

Lumina designs and makes on-chip optical components, focusing on electro-optic modulators and photonic integrated circuits built on a thin-film lithium tantalate platform. This choice gives broad spectral coverage from deep ultraviolet to infrared while avoiding common stability issues seen with lithium niobate. The company offers standard off-the-shelf modulators, custom design and fabrication, and a Process Design Kit so partners can design their own PICs on Lumina’s platform. Its goal is to help customers move from lab concepts to deployable chip-scale photonic systems in fields like quantum computing, biophotonics, precision sensing, and defense.
