- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or have education equivalent for licensing.
- Hold Basic Life Support HealthCare Provider certification from the American Heart Association.
- Hold a Registered Nurse license issued by the applicable state authority or a compact-state RN license, as specified for the state of work location.
- Maintain competency in all required nursing skills.
- Use speech for oral communication, and be able to stand and walk constantly.
- Be able to frequently lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing 0–25 pounds; sit, reach, and use a keyboard for data entry; use vision, depth perception, smell, and hearing for care duties and alarms.
- Be able to occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing 25–50 pounds and lift or move patients; perform occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, gripping, and repetitive foot, leg, hand, and arm movements.
- Be able to drive occasionally and crawl or run rarely.
- Provide skilled nursing care to residents according to established care plans and federal and state regulations.
- Provide quality care to acute, subacute, and chronically ill residents.
- Administer medications and treatments according to standards of care.
- Provide direction to certified nursing assistants and monitor unit workflow to coordinate care.
- Use the nursing process for assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation.
- Report significant changes in residents’ conditions to physicians as indicated.
- Maintain accurate medication inventory at the beginning and end of each shift.
- Distribute medications accurately according to the five rights and monitor for medication side effects.
- Provide medications in accordance with manufacturers’ guidelines.
- Give guidance and direction to auxiliary staff.
- Participate in report meetings at the beginning and end of each shift.
- Communicate with residents, guardians, and family members about residents’ current conditions and needs in accordance with regulations and standards of practice.
- Teach and train residents and families as needed.
- Ensure preventive measures are in place, including specialty mattresses, foam boots, skin checks, turning and repositioning schedules, toileting schedules, and wheelchair cushions.
- Follow up on reports of rashes, open areas, edema, blisters, skin tears, or bleeding.
- Respond promptly to alarms.
- Ensure restraint alternatives are in place or activated, including personal alarms, cushion alarms, wheelchair belts, tumble mats, alarm mats, bolstered beds, and hip protectors.
- Provide and ensure quality end-of-life care.
- Use comfort baskets to meet resident and family needs.
- Ensure hygiene, comfort, and spiritual needs are met.
- Treat pain and restlessness.
- Offer family courtesy meal trays and other amenities.
- Comply with post-mortem care procedures.
- Participate in departure ceremonies.
- Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
- Perform point-of-care testing according to policies and procedures when required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
