Sonus Microsystems has partnered with Medtronic to integrate its AI-powered wearable ultrasound platform with Medtronic's vital-sign monitoring technology. The collaboration, funded by the Gates Foundation, will evaluate the combined system in field studies in Kenya. The partnership aims to develop a non-invasive monitoring system for screening and triaging pregnant women at risk of early-onset preeclampsia. The studies will be coordinated with Kenyatta University and antenatal facilities in Nairobi. Preeclampsia affects approximately 8% of pregnancies globally and is a major cause of maternal and fetal mortality in low- and middle-income countries. The condition is characterised by high blood pressure and organ damage, yet current screening relies primarily on blood pressure measurement alone. The Sonus Patch makes ultrasound autonomous, enabling delivery in settings without specialised sonographers.
Jim Cramer described Medtronic as a "quandary" on Mad Money, noting the medical device company delivered strong growth but its stock price remains unchanged since reporting. Medtronic posted fiscal first-quarter revenue of nearly $9.8 billion, up 13.7% organically, whilst non-GAAP diluted earnings per share rose 15.1% to $1.45. The company raised its full-year organic revenue growth forecast to 7.25%-7.75% from 6.75%-7.25%. Cardiovascular revenue increased 18.9% organically to $3.927 billion, with Cardiac Ablation Solutions up 88%. Medtronic plans to separate its diabetes division by year-end. Cramer expressed concern about diabetes divisions amid rising GLP-1 treatments. The first quarter included an extra fiscal week contributing approximately $570 million to growth.
