Requirements
  • Registered Dietitian or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist registration through the Commission on Dietetic Registration.
  • Current licensure as required by the state board where services will be provided, including West Virginia, Maryland, or Ohio licensure pathways.
  • A state criminal background check and federal background check, if applicable, as required for regulated areas.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Basic math skills, including addition and subtraction.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Ability to organize work requiring concentrated mental activity.
  • Ability to respond to changes in work volume throughout the shift.
  • Ability to work Saturdays and some holidays and occasionally attend an evening meeting.
  • Ability to interact positively with co-workers, patients, families, and other members of the medical team.
  • Frequent walking, sitting, and standing are required to complete the essential functions of the job.
Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive medical nutrition therapy to patients across infant, pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations.
  • Complete physician-ordered consultations and instructions according to standards of care, document them in the medical record, and contact physicians regarding concerns and recommendations.
  • Document NPO and clear-liquid notes by day five and follow up until nutrition is provided unless contraindicated.
  • Complete and accurately document calorie counts and summarize results within 24 hours when nutritional recommendations are warranted.
  • Accurately and promptly calculate and report nitrogen balance and metabolic cart study results.
  • Complete and document nutrition assessments for high-risk patients, including diet appropriateness, tube feeding, infant formula and parenteral nutrition orders, laboratory values, drug-nutrient interactions, medical history, nutritional needs, nutrition education needs, care-plan development, and electronic medical record orders when intervention is needed.
  • Use registered and licensed dietitian order-writing privileges, with physician co-signature, when the physician orders the Medical Nutrition Therapy Protocol and when permitted within the dietitian's scope of practice.
  • Maintain clinical competency through current registration, current licensure, and the annual performance appraisal process in accordance with order-writing privilege guidelines.
  • Complete and document follow-up to assessments and consultations according to standards.
  • Attend local or national meetings and conferences requested by physicians or required to maintain hospital-program accreditation or partnerships with other facilities.
  • Provide guidance and supervise daily activities of the nutritional therapy support team when applicable, including difficult or unusual diet orders and tube-feeding or infant-formula calculations.
  • Document potential or actual errors or harmful interactions involving nutrition care staff on assigned units and provide intervention and participate in disciplinary actions as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurse managers, nursing staff, and speech pathologists to improve medical nutrition therapy, diet textures, aspiration-risk food selections, and medication timing to prevent drug-nutrient interactions.
  • Address patient food complaints, provide alternative selections or arrangements, and follow up with managers on food-quality issues.
  • Review and update clinical rotation assignments annually to reflect practice changes and prior intern feedback unless determined by the student's university.
  • Develop and teach classes in areas of specialization, such as renal nutrition, oncology, and nutrition support, for interns.
  • Monitor interns to ensure they meet standards before working unsupervised, review and co-sign intern medical-record documentation, correct assignments, evaluate progress, and assess intern case-study presentations.
  • Develop and present in-service training to health care personnel, food service personnel, and students when requested.
  • Develop and present lectures to community groups when requested.
  • Work primarily in patient-care units, with some office, classroom, meeting-room, and occasional community-speaking duties.
