Apple posts 9th straight earnings beat with revenue up 16% to $109B, contradicting Jefferies' downgrade

Apple reported its ninth consecutive earnings beat in Q3 2026, with revenue up 16% to $109 billion and iPhone sales rising to $54.25 billion. This contradicts Jefferies' recent downgrade to Underperform with a $264 price target, which cited rising memory costs and a reportedly cancelled all-glass iPhone redesign. Bloomberg has since confirmed the all-glass iPhone Pro remains on track for 2027, undermining a key element of Jefferies' thesis. Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested memory supply concerns are overstated, noting Apple plans processor production months ahead. Apple's gross margin stands at 46.91%, with operating margin at 31.97%. Wall Street consensus rates the stock a Moderate Buy with a $329 average price target, contrasting sharply with Jefferies' bearish stance.

Jefferies downgrades Apple to sell after $2T glass iPhone cancellation

Jefferies has downgraded Apple stock to underperform, cutting its price target to $263.66 from $285.56, representing potential losses of around 16%. Analyst Edison Lee cited supply chain checks indicating Apple cancelled its planned all-glass iPhone, scheduled for September 2027, due to low production yield. Lee described the cancellation as "a major setback" for Apple's efforts to introduce higher-priced devices amid rising memory costs. The all-glass model was expected to mark the iPhone's 20th anniversary and eventually extend to Pro models. Lee now sees Apple's foldable iPhone, expected in September 2026, as the only near-term product capable of lifting average selling prices. However, he warned that growing AI demand could push memory costs higher, potentially sending the foldable's entry price above $2,000. Jefferies lowered its fiscal year 2028 earnings per share forecast by 2.1%. Apple shares closed down 1.5% on Monday.

Apple dips 7% to $308 as margin concerns offset $100B buyback and $30B quarterly services revenue

Apple shares dropped 7% to $308 since third-quarter earnings, while the broader market climbed, creating a notable disconnect. The tech giant's installed base exceeds 2.5 billion active devices, and its Services division generates $30 billion quarterly at a 77% gross margin. Third-quarter iPhone revenue reached $54.25 billion, up from $44.58 billion year-on-year. The company delivered earnings per share of $2.02, beating estimates of $1.89, marking its ninth consecutive quarterly beat. Apple recently authorised a $100 billion buyback programme. The company posted a 171% return on equity and 31.97% operating margin. However, management flagged concerns about higher memory costs ahead, and the third-quarter gross margin received a temporary boost from tariff refunds that will not recur.

Apple invests $1.5B in Globalstar to expand satellite SOS across iPhone 14 and 15 until 2026

Apple is investing $1.5 billion in satellite operator Globalstar to expand its emergency satellite SOS service. The investment includes $1.1 billion in cash and $400 million for a 20% stake in the company. The satellite emergency feature will remain free for iPhone 14 and 15 users until at least September 2026. After that date, Apple may introduce a subscription model. Competing services are emerging globally. China Mobile offers free satellite emergency calls, whilst China Telecom provides daily SMS and voice services through its Tiantong network. In the United Arab Emirates, Space42 and Skylo are testing two-way SMS and emergency calls via the Thuraya-4 satellite. The technology requires specific hardware capabilities. Google's upcoming Pixel 9a will lack satellite features because its Exynos 5300 modem doesn't support the function, highlighting that software updates cannot bridge this gap.

Apple adds $1.5T in market value in a year, $10,000 investment from 2016 now worth $126,000

Apple's market value has surged 51% over the past year to approximately $4.54 trillion, adding more than $1.5 trillion. This gain exceeds two and a half times the company's entire valuation of $580 billion in August 2016. An investor who put $10,000 into Apple shares a decade ago would now hold about $126,000, including reinvested dividends. The stock price rose 11.5-fold, from $27 to $311 on a split-adjusted basis. The gain stemmed from two factors: earnings per share grew fourfold to $8.72, whilst the company retired about a third of its shares. Apple's share buyback programme reduced outstanding shares from 22 billion to 14.6 billion over the decade. The company's dividend yield fell from 2% to 0.35% as share price appreciation outpaced payout growth.
