Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Knowledge of sterilization techniques and policies, ordering, freight receiving, issuing, inventory, and stocking is required.
  • Experience using general office equipment is required.
  • Basic computer skills, including email functions, are required.
  • The employee must communicate clearly and effectively and have legible handwriting.
  • The employee must be able to handle frequent interruptions, prioritize tasks, and quickly return to emergent tasks.
  • The employee must follow infection-control procedures, standard precautions, personal protective equipment requirements, handwashing practices, and isolation procedures.
  • The employee must understand safety policies and procedures, material safety data sheets, hazardous-material procedures, safety codes, and security issues.
  • The employee must be able to adapt to varied age-specific patient populations and interact appropriately with patients, families, physicians, visitors, and employees.
  • The employee must be able to stand, walk, routinely carry items, climb stairs while carrying objects, lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and up to 25 pounds frequently, and work any shift or day during emergencies.
  • The employee must follow hospital attendance, scheduling, overtime-approval, identification-badge, meeting, in-service, and assigned-duty procedures.
Responsibilities
  • Assemble surgical trays and equipment according to established tray listings, and wrap or pouch items based on instrument or equipment size and type.
  • Use internal, external, and biological monitoring systems; monitor, read, document, and interpret sterilizer parameters.
  • Process and package medical and surgical items according to quality-assurance and departmental procedures.
  • Assemble, sterilize, and store medical and surgical equipment using aseptic techniques; rotate dated supplies; and pack and sterilize linens and treatment trays.
  • Receive and distribute sterile and non-sterile supplies ordered from vendors for patient care.
  • Receive goods, store items orderly, and check and maintain stock levels in Central Service and hospital departments.
  • Apply patient charge stickers to charged items and print stickers in the computer system as needed.
  • Unpack freight, distribute it to designated storage areas, and verify that shipments are accounted for and undamaged.
  • Maintain clean work areas, hallways, storage rooms, and Central Supply by removing empty boxes, carts, and excess packaging.
  • Rotate stock to remove outdated products and maintain rotation throughout facility departments.
  • Check freight against receiving documents, obtain delivery signatures, and refer items without purchase-order numbers to the Purchasing/Central Service Manager.
  • Update shelf labels and order sheets when changes occur.
  • Fill in for the Purchasing Materials Clerk as required.
  • Assist with inventory counts and conduct regular supply inventories with the Purchasing/Central Service Manager.
  • Ship repairs, implants, and loaners using established tracking protocols and log all shipments.
  • Work varying shifts and weekends as required.
  • Attend continuing-education workshops and seminars required to maintain departmental competency.
  • Perform repetitive tasks and interact tactfully with patients, relatives, the public, physicians, and coworkers.
  • Establish and review minimum and maximum stocking levels to prevent shortages or excessive inventory turns.
  • Issue and transfer supplies from inventory to appropriate departments for expense and inventory purposes.
  • Count supplies weekly with the Purchasing Materials Clerk or Central Service Technician/Supplies, identify items requiring reorder, and advise the Purchasing/Central Service Manager.
  • Process departmental biweekly timesheets accurately and timely for payroll processing.
  • Perform other Central Service Technician/Processing duties assigned by the Purchasing/Central Service Manager.
