Responsibilities
Assemble surgical trays and equipment according to established tray listings, and wrap or pouch items according to the size and type of instrument or equipment.
Use internal, external, and biological monitoring systems; monitor, read, document, and interpret sterilizer parameters to ensure proper function.
Ensure medical and surgical items are processed and packaged according to quality-assurance and departmental procedures by periodically reviewing processed work.
Assemble, sterilize, and store medical and surgical equipment according to hospital procedures, using aseptic techniques, rotating dated supplies, and packing and sterilizing linens and treatment trays.
Receive and distribute vendor supplies, providing sterile and non-sterile supplies and service for hospital patient care.
Receive goods, store items in an orderly fashion, and check and maintain stock levels in Central Service and hospital departments according to established inventory guidelines and direction from managers.
Distribute sterile and non-sterile supplies purchased from manufacturers, including disposable items, according to the Central Supply checklist.
Place patient charge stickers on items charged to patients and print the stickers from the computer as needed.
Unpack freight, distribute it to designated storage areas, and ensure deliveries are accounted for and checked for damage before distribution.
Maintain organized and clean basement storage and Central Supply areas, and rotate stock upon receipt and within departments to remove outdated products.
Check freight against receiving documents, obtain delivery signatures, and contact the Purchasing/CS Manager when items lack a purchase order number; do not deliver items not on a purchase order.
Update shelf labels and order sheets whenever changes occur, and promptly remove empty boxes and packaging from hallways to the dumpster.
Fill in for the Purchasing Materials Clerk as required and assist with inventory as requested by the Purchasing/CS Manager.
Ship repairs, implants, and loaners using established tracking protocols and log all shipments.
Assist the CS/Purchasing Manager by performing regular supply inventories to ensure accurate accounting of facility supply expenses.
Establish and regularly review minimum and maximum stocking levels to prevent shortages or increased inventory turns.
Issue and transfer supplies from inventory to appropriate departments for expense and inventory purposes.
Take weekly stock with the Purchasing Materials Clerk and/or CS Technician/Supplies to identify items to order based on reorder points and advise the Purchasing/CS Manager.
Perform other Central Service Technician/Processing duties assigned by the Purchasing/CS Manager.
Process departmental biweekly timesheets accurately and on time to support payroll processing.
Description
Position Summary: The Central Service Technician/Processing position is responsible for maintaining high standards for decontamination, assembly, inspecting, wrapping, and sterilization of surgical instruments and medical equipment for Surgical Services and all other departments. This includes working in conjunction with the OR staff to provide timely sterile products and trays where applicable. The Central Service Technician/Processing maintains consistency and continuous workflow between the OR and Central Service while providing excellent customer service. The Central Service Technician/Processing is to insure that all sterile processing is done daily and in accordance with hospital policies and procedures, all supplies that are ordered from vendors are received and distributed, that stock levels do not exceed nor fall below recommended or required inventory guidelines.
POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA:
· Assembles surgical trays and equipment following established tray listings. Wraps or pouches items according to size and type of instrument or equipment.
· Uses internal, external and biological monitoring systems appropriately. Monitors, reads, documents, and interprets all parameters of sterilizers to insure proper function.
· Ensures that medical and surgical items are processed and packaged according to established quality assurance and departmental operating procedures by periodically reviewing processed work.
· Will follow established hospital procedures in assembling, sterilizing and storing all medical and surgical equipment, utilizing aseptic techniques, rotating dated supplies as indicated, packing and sterilizing linens and treatment trays.
· Receives and distributes all supplies ordered from vendors; furnishing sterile and non-sterile supplies and service for the care and treatment of hospital patients.
· Responsible for receiving goods, storing items in an orderly fashion and checking and maintaining stock levels in CS and different departments within the hospital as established by the Purchasing/CS Manager with the direction of department managers.
· Shall distribute sterile and non-sterile supplies purchased from manufacturers, including disposable items as per an established Central Supply check list.
· Responsible for putting patient charge stickers on all items charged to patients as per an established numbering system and printing the patient charge stickers on the computer as needed.
· Responsible for unpacking freight and distributing it to designated storage areas and insuring that all freight received in the facility is accounted for and checked for damage before distribution.
· Responsible for maintaining a clean work area, keeping all walkways and outlying areas free from empty boxes, carts or excess packaging material.
· Responsible for maintaining a well-organized and clean basement storage room area and central supply.
· Responsible for rotating stock upon receipt to insure outdated product is removed and rotating all stock within the departments in the facility.
· Responsible for checking in freight against the receiving document and obtaining a signature upon delivery. Must call Purchasing/CS Manager if items received do not reference a purchase order number. Cannot deliver any items not on a purchase order.
· Responsible for updating shelf labels and order sheets anytime a change occurs.
· Must keep hallway clear of all empty boxes or packaging material by hauling items out to the dumpster in a timely fashion.
· May be called upon to fill in for the Purchasing Materials Clerk as required.
· Assists in taking inventory as requested by the Purchasing/CS Manager.
· Responsible for shipping out repairs, implants, loaners etc. using established tracking protocol. Must log all shipments in designated log book.
· Must be willing to work different shifts and weekends as required by the Purchasing/CS Manager.
· Must be willing to attend continuing education workshops and seminars as required to maintain an acceptable competency in the department.
· Must be willing to perform repetitive tasks, be tactful and diplomatic in contacts with patients, relatives, public, physicians and co-workers.
· Assists the CS/Purchasing Manager by performing supply inventories on a regular basis once per year to insure accurate accounting for facility supply expenses.
· Establishes and reviews on a regular basis a minimum and maximum stocking level for all items to prevent stock shortages or increased inventory turns.
· Issues/Transfers supplies out of inventory to appropriate departments for expense and inventory purposes.
· Will be responsible for taking stock of all supplies on a weekly basis with the Purchasing Materials Clerk and or CS Tech/Supplies for the purpose of ordering those supplies needed according to a reorder point, established by need and advising the Purchasing/CS Manager for the purpose of ordering.
· Performs other Central Service Technician/Processing duties as assigned by the Purchasing/CS Manager.
· Processes departmental biweekly time sheets in an accurate, timely manner to insure the accuracy of payroll processing.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
The main station is in Central Supply with duties extending out on the floor, the basement storage room, back loading dock and all the different departments such as OR, ER, OB, ICU, PAR, etc. The Central Supply area must be kept clean and orderly, along with any equipment that is in the area. Work environment may become stressful on freight days due to the need to keep the hallway clear, checking in and tagging stock. Work hours for the Central Service Technician/Processing will be primarily from 7am to 3:30pm but may vary if circumstances should arise. Subject to varying weather conditions when signing for and checking in freight.
WAGE AND COMPENSATION
Wage range $ 18.65 hr. - $ 27.71 hr. – DOE
