Requirements
  • At least 2 years of work experience in a journeyman mechanic position, including 1 year in a power plant or related industry.
  • Understanding of power plant dynamics.
  • Ability to climb and work in high places.
  • Ability to work around rotating equipment and high-pressure power plant systems.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment.
  • Ability to work safely and efficiently around energized circuits and in hot, cold, and dusty environments, including occasional long hours and weekends.
  • Must not be impaired by color blindness.
  • Ability to pass the switching and tagging test.
Responsibilities
  • Perform journeyman-level installation, repair, and maintenance of facility mechanical support equipment, systems, and components, as well as duties of lower classifications in the progression.
  • Perform corrective and preventive mechanical maintenance tasks; interpret design drawings and operation and maintenance manuals to locate and diagnose equipment, component, and system problems; and replace worn, damaged, or failed equipment and components.
  • Repair mechanical units for turbine generators using proper tools and equipment.
  • Repair the mechanical and hydraulic systems of boiler feed pumps, including aligning couplings and repairing bearings and other parts as necessary.
  • Repair condensate and circulating water systems, including checking clearances, aligning couplings, and repairing traveling screens where necessary.
  • Repair component parts of fans, including aligning couplings and repairing or replacing bearings.
  • Identify and repair plant component parts and systems, including feed water, hydraulic, fuel handling, pumps and pumping, lubricating, fuel oil, fire, valves, packing, condensers, and piping systems.
  • Perform emergency repairs to systems, equipment, and components, and record their as-found and repaired conditions.
  • Assist Engineering with modifications and revisions to plant systems, equipment, and components.
  • Conduct required inspections and post-maintenance testing to complete work packages and return systems, equipment, and components to operational condition.
  • Assist other crafts with mechanical maintenance tasks beyond the maintenance department's capability and provide technical support.
  • Maintain accountability for property, tools, and maintenance equipment.
  • Perform preventive maintenance tasks using predetermined checklists.
  • Perform other assigned duties.

Duke Energy cuts Eastern NC and Asheville rate increase from 15.1% to 9.3%

Duke Energy Progress has agreed to reduce its proposed rate increase for customers in eastern North Carolina and the Asheville area from 15.1% to 9.3% over two years. The average residential customer will pay an additional $9.62 per month starting January, plus $5.89 more beginning January 2028. The settlement also caps Duke's return on equity at 9.8%. This follows significant pushback from state leaders and customers after Duke Energy reported $5 billion in profits in 2025 and over $1 billion in net income last quarter. The North Carolina Utilities Commission will review the proposal starting 11 August, with a final decision expected this autumn. Duke Energy Carolinas previously lowered its rate increase to 9.5%. Both Duke utilities will merge into one by 1 January 2026.
