Requirements
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of West Virginia, or applicable state where services will be performed.
- Board certified or recertified by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.
- Ability to see details at close range within a few feet of the observer.
- Ability to maintain composure in high-stress situations.
- Ability to work in close contact with individuals who may have infectious diseases and with toxic, harmful, or potentially hazardous compounds, solutions, and medications.
- Must observe rigid, standardized guidelines to guard against disease and dangers posed by radiation, accidental needle sticks, chemicals used to sterilize instruments, and anesthetics.
- May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, or on-call shifts.
Responsibilities
- Provide anesthetic care for all types of patients and procedures in cooperation with the supervising or medically directing physician and in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
- Administer anesthesia to patients to render them insensitive to pain during surgery and procedures.
- Continuously monitor patients' physical reactions to sedatives, analgesics, and anesthetic agents and inform the surgeon or anesthesiologist of adverse conditions threatening patient safety or care.
- Maintain patient safety at all times.
- Maintain excellence in airway management and use airway adjuncts such as Bullard devices, fiberoptic scopes, and intubating laryngeal mask airways.
- Work within the scope of delineated clinical privileges.
- Take precautions to minimize infection risks for patients and health care professionals.
- Maintain appropriate confidentiality of patient information.
- Participate in pre-anesthetic patient evaluation and selection of anesthetic agents and techniques.
- Perform anesthetic techniques including intravenous catheter insertion, invasive monitoring catheter insertion according to established protocol, endotracheal intubation and extubation, and arterial punctures for interpretation of arterial blood gases.
- Monitor patients' physical responses to anesthesia and report adverse conditions to the surgeon or anesthesiologist.
- Manage induction, maintenance, and emergence for general, regional, and monitored anesthesia cases.
- Recognize abnormal patient responses to anesthesia, adjunctive medication, or therapy and initiate corrective measures.
- Determine the need for additional laboratory tests and provide resuscitative care as necessary.
- Evaluate and manage patients during the immediate postoperative period.
- Administer intravenous fluids based on the patient's medical history and surgical procedure.
- Administer blood products after obtaining a hematocrit and consulting with the surgeon or anesthesiologist.
- Document patient status appropriately in the anesthesia record.
- Perform required safety and performance checks on anesthesia-related equipment and verify appropriate supplies before initiating care.
- Procure and assemble equipment and supplies when an anesthesia technician is unavailable.
- Review informed-consent documentation and identify the appropriate surgical site during the SBAR process with circulating and holding-room registered nurses.
- Participate in the surgical pause in the operating room with the entire surgical team in accordance with departmental and regulatory compliance standards.
- Communicate with individuals involved in perioperative and postoperative patient care.
- Provide anesthesia care responsibly in life-threatening emergencies when an anesthesiologist is absent.
- Assist with teaching and evaluating newly hired Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Graduate Registered Nurse Anesthetists, and Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists in the clinical area.
- Assume responsibility and accountability for controlled substances according to department and hospital policy and state and federal guidelines.
