Petco loses millions as loyalty program redemptions exceed projections

Petco's revamped loyalty programme, Petco Perks, cost the retailer millions in its second quarter after customer redemptions significantly exceeded projections. CEO Joel Anderson said on Wednesday's earnings call that the impact reached "mid-single-digit millions", causing sales to remain flat year over year instead of growing 0.3% as forecast. The relaunched programme, which began in late June, removed friction from the previous version. Members now earn 10 points per dollar spent on most products and 30 points per dollar on private label brands, with 1,000 points worth $1. Petco has since implemented guardrails on redemption velocity. Anderson said the company believes peak redemption volumes have passed and expects the programme to support long-term growth starting in 2027.

Petco beats profit forecasts with $0.15 EPS despite flat $1.49B Q2 sales, boosted by Perks loyalty relaunch

Petco reported flat second-quarter sales of $1.49 billion, meeting analyst expectations, but delivered a significant earnings beat with non-GAAP profit of $0.15 per share versus estimates of $0.07. Adjusted EBITDA of $122.2 million exceeded forecasts by 10.9%. CEO Joel Anderson attributed the performance to improved customer engagement following the relaunch of the Petco Perks membership programme, though increased point redemption temporarily pressured net sales. Same-store sales were flat year on year. The company guided third-quarter revenue to $1.47 billion, in line with expectations. Management highlighted growth in companion animal categories and resilience in consumables as stabilising factors. Petco operates 1,377 locations, down from 1,388 a year earlier. The company plans to continue investing in veterinary services, fresh food partnerships, and personalised marketing to deepen customer loyalty whilst managing supply chain cost pressures.

Walgreens, US Foods, Petco and More Recognized in the Inaugural Class of Top Supply Chain Leaders by SPS Commerce

The Associated Press Aug 19, 2026, 8:10 AM Walgreens, US Foods, Petco and more recognized in the inaugural class of Top Supply Chain Leaders by SPS Commerce. MINNEAPOLIS-(BUSINESS WIRE)-Aug 19, 2026- SPS Commerce (NASDAQ: SPSC), the leading intelligent supply chain network, today announced the inaugural class of its Top Supply Chain Leaders, recognizing an initial 50 operational leaders and their teams from organizations across the U.S. and Canada, including Walgreens, US Foods, Petco, Fastenal, Ace Hardware, Gordon Food Service, and Canadian Tire. The recognition celebrates leadership in driving innovation, resilience, and operational excellence across retail, grocery, and distribution. In recent years, supply chain has become one of the most visible and strategically important functions inside an organization. Yet the leaders responsible for navigating disruption, modernizing operations, transforming with AI, and strengthening customer relationships often do not get the public recognition they deserve. SPS Commerce created the "Top Supply Chain Leaders" list to close that gap. As the leading intelligent supply chain network, trusted by seven of the top ten largest retailers per NRF and over two-thirds of today's fastest growing brands by Bain & Company, SPS is uniquely positioned to highlight the retailers, brands, manufacturers, distributors, and logistics providers that are setting a high bar for future operations. "The future of supply chain won't be defined by technology alone, but by the leaders who know how to use it to solve increasingly complex business challenges," said Tony DiPaolo, General Manager of Retail at SPS Commerce. "These honorees and their teams are setting a new standard for operational excellence while helping their organizations become more resilient, collaborative, and better prepared for what's next in the Agentic AI era. We're proud to recognize these individuals whose work often happens behind the scenes but positively impacts millions of consumers every day." As AI, automation and increasingly connected trading networks transform supply chain operations, SPS Commerce believes the industry's greatest competitive advantage remains the people who successfully bring those technologies together to solve real-world operational challenges. "We are honored to be recognized by SPS Commerce alongside so many accomplished leaders across retail, grocery, and distribution," said Jeff Swiney, Director, Supply Chain & Logistics at K-VA-T Food Stores (Food City). "This acknowledgement reflects our team's commitment to building stronger partnerships, embracing innovation, and finding better ways to keep products moving for the customers and communities we serve, despite an increasingly complex business environment." The inaugural list was selected by SPS Commerce based on their demonstrated leadership, industry impact, and commitment to advancing supply chain excellence. Additional leaders will be recognized in the coming months, completing the inaugural class of Top Supply Chain Leaders for 2026, with plans to continue an annual list in subsequent years. Petco to open second Sioux Falls store.

Petco to open second Sioux Falls store. Aug. 13, 2026 National pet retailer Petco plans to open its second store in Sioux Falls, joining the growing lineup of businesses at the new Foss Fields development. Petco will join Hobby Lobby and Sierra, which both recently announced locations in the development on the southwest corner of Sixth Street and Veterans Parkway. The store will be on the north end of the 118,000-square-foot retail center. Petco sells a variety of pet-related products, including food, toys, supplies and fish. The store also will offer dog grooming and dog training. The original location in Sioux Falls is at 3110 S. Louise Ave. "Petco is an exciting addition to our retail lineup at Foss Fields," said Ryan Tysdal of Tysdal Commercial, the leasing agent for Foss Fields. "Their product mix complements the other retailers in the development well." The store represents a growing segment of retail, he added. "The pet category is a big part of retail," Tysdal said. "People love their pets and enjoy spoiling them." The building that includes Petco also has space for two additional retailers, while the overall phase of the development also includes space for restaurants and smaller retail tenants. "Sioux Falls is a successful market for most national retailers who come here," Tysdal said. "They want to grow in markets like Sioux Falls where sales numbers are strong." Petco anticipates being open for business next fall in time for the 2027 holiday season.
