Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree and at least 12 years of claims-handling experience in the insurance industry or equivalent applicable experience; alternatively, a high school diploma and 16 years of relevant experience.
  • Extensive experience handling commercial and homeowners' property claims.
  • At least five years of large-loss property claims experience involving exposures of $250,000 or more.
  • Advanced technical knowledge, including estimating skills using software such as Xactimate and Cotality.
  • Strong coverage-analysis skills and experience drafting coverage-position correspondence.
  • Experience handling litigated files and directing defense counsel.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Ability to travel 50%.
  • Licensure as required by the respective state or states.
  • Ability to analyze data, use sound judgment to draw conclusions, and make supported decisions.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without requiring visa sponsorship now or in the future.
Responsibilities
  • Handle highly complex exposure claims in accordance with claim guidelines.
  • Direct and manage independent investigators, appraisers, and experts.
  • Select, direct, and manage defense counsel, including approval of budgets.
  • Develop litigation and file-disposition strategies and attend mediations, settlement conferences, and trials as needed.
  • Report to reinsurers as required by reporting guidelines.
  • Assist senior claim specialists with analysis of claim issues as needed.
  • Verify and analyze applicable coverage for reported losses.
  • Establish 24-hour contact and maintain appropriate contact with all involved stakeholders throughout the life of each claim file.
  • Investigate claims by gathering information, conducting interviews, taking statements, conducting website research as needed, and reviewing and analyzing reports and related bills.
  • Identify and address subrogation, contribution, and special-investigation-unit opportunities.
  • Set accurate and timely loss and expense reserves in compliance with claim guidelines.
  • Evaluate, negotiate, and authorize settlements with stakeholders within designated authority.
  • Negotiate directly with claimants and claimant attorneys upon receipt of critical information.
  • Draft correspondence, including coverage letters to stakeholders as required.
  • Maintain resident and nonresident adjuster licenses as required.
  • Provide continued training and development of the claims discipline on technical matters.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
