Requirements
  • A Juris Doctor or equivalent from an American Bar Association-accredited law school is required.
  • Admission to the bar is required.
  • At least 5 years of experience advising or mentoring law students and/or law graduates is required.
  • Deep knowledge of law school curricula, law school pedagogical approaches, and developments in the legal market is required.
  • Strong legal writing, research, and analysis skills are required.
  • Strong oral presentation skills are required.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound, ethical, and professional judgment is required.
  • Knowledge of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and implementing regulations is required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and social media platforms is required.
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience and attention to detail are required.
  • At least 1 year of legal practice or post-graduate clerkship is required.
  • The ability to build rapport with and gain trust of students, faculty, and staff is required.
  • The candidate must be self-motivated and able to initiate and set goals and prioritize tasks.
Responsibilities
  • Serve as the law school expert on academic advising for Juris Doctor students.
  • Conceptualize, develop, structure, organize, and monitor the law school's academic advising activities.
  • Ensure that students are informed about the law school's academic and student services.
  • Develop best-practices training materials for advisors based on knowledge of the legal market, school initiatives, and course offerings.
  • Develop student feedback mechanisms to monitor the efficacy of advising efforts and address issues as necessary.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of administrative and substantive student resources and convey them to all constituencies.
  • Draft and update graduation requirement guides for student use.
  • Coordinate substantive academic counseling efforts with faculty, staff, and student groups, including scheduling and materials development.
  • Develop subject-matter-specific academic advising guides based on curricular offerings with input from law school subject-matter experts.
  • Maintain the law school's Academic Advising presence on the external website and internal Office of Academic Excellence platforms, including online scheduling, refreshing materials, and promoting advising information through social media.
  • Design, plan, schedule, and lead mandatory first-year supplemental advising sessions through the Compass program.
  • Lead all aspects of the Compass program in collaboration with other student-facing offices.
  • Organize the Office of Academic Excellence's advising activities before registration each semester.
  • Personally advise students on course selection and graduation requirements.
  • Review academic forms and meet with students as necessary.
  • Work with students and faculty on academic issues related to specific students.
  • Provide strategic counseling to improve students' academic skills and achievement in law school and on the bar exam.
  • Maintain awareness of best practices for bar exam preparation and provide feedback and advice on legal analysis, legal writing, and time management.
  • Develop and implement services supporting the academic experience and satisfaction of Juris Doctor students at Washington College of Law.
  • Serve on committees as assigned.
  • Supervise student workers.
  • Travel to national or regional conferences or meetings as appropriate.
  • Work some evenings and weekends based on program and student needs.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Juris Doctor degree is preferred.
