Requirements
- An associate's degree in neurodiagnostic technology, a comparable field, biological science, health science, or a related field is strongly preferred.
- A bachelor's degree in biological science, health science, or a related field is preferred.
- For Level 1, an associate's degree in neurodiagnostic technology or a comparable field requires no experience; an associate's degree in a biological, health science, or related field requires six months of direct patient care experience or one year of non-patient care healthcare, laboratory, or research experience; a bachelor's degree in biological, health science, or a related field requires no experience; alternatively, a high school diploma requires five years of clinical neurodiagnostic experience and registry or certification in one neurodiagnostic technology modality.
- For Level 2, two years of experience in neurodiagnostic technology are required.
- For Level 3, five years of experience in neurodiagnostic technology are required; a bachelor's degree in biological or health science can substitute for two years of experience.
- For Level 2, competency in two neurodiagnostic technology modalities and registry or certification in one modality are required.
- For Level 3, competency in three neurodiagnostic technology modalities and registry or certification in one modality are required.
- The position requires the ability to work independently on second-, third-, and weekend shifts and participate in the on-call schedule.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine and complex neurodiagnostic procedures to obtain data used to diagnose clinical disorders of the nervous system.
- Perform EEG, evoked potentials, and epilepsy monitoring studies according to the applicable level.
- Explain testing procedures to patients and families using age-appropriate language.
- Take and document pertinent patient or chart histories.
- Prepare patients, paperwork, rooms, and equipment for appropriate studies.
- Run studies with appropriate documentation, observe patients, troubleshoot equipment and physiological artifacts, distinguish normal from abnormal findings, and use appropriate resources.
- Recognize and respond appropriately to evolving patient care needs.
- Clean the patient, room, and equipment after each study.
- Use downtime for training, equipment cleaning, and educational reading.
- Perform EEG in the operating room.
- Maintain equipment and communicate problems to coworkers, the appropriate vendor, or the supervisor.
- Act as a float resource to the sleep lab when required.
- Maintain a registry in EEG, evoked potentials, or epilepsy monitoring as applicable.
- Develop clinical standards and protocols.
- Independently troubleshoot equipment and laboratory issues as an equipment super user.
- Generate requisitions for patient studies.
- Process daily charges.
- Perform designated annual hours as a charge technician.
- Complete the required continuing education hours and maintain clinical ladder requirements for the applicable level.
- Select the required professional growth options for the applicable level.
Desired Qualifications
- Competency and/or registry or certification in one neurodiagnostic technology modality is preferred at Level 1.
- Two registries or certifications are preferred at Level 3.
