Requirements
  • A Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field is required.
  • Research experience in integrated photonics, quantum optics, quantum networking, or nonlinear optics is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop innovative solutions by applying research results and technical knowledge from a broad range of sources.
  • Experience with multiphysics simulation at both the device and optical-system levels.
  • Demonstrated laboratory expertise and a strong track record of independently troubleshooting and solving complex experimental problems in free-space optics, fiber optics, integrated photonics, microwave systems engineering, custom electronics design, and vacuum equipment and hardware.
  • Expertise in quantum optics, quantum entanglement, integrated photonics, or quantum networking.
  • Experience using Lumerical and other relevant simulation, modeling, and design software.
  • A strong record of publications in top-tier, peer-reviewed scientific journals.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate research concepts into practical experimental systems, prototypes, and solutions.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and experimental skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly communicate technical concepts and experimental results.

Responsibilities
  • Design, build, test, and analyze optical, optoelectronic, and photonic experiments for quantum communications systems and platforms.
  • Develop and evaluate experimental approaches involving integrated photonics, quantum optics, and related technologies.
  • Translate theoretical concepts and research findings into practical experimental implementations and prototypes.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary research and development teams to advance quantum communications technologies.
  • Design, simulate, calculate, construct, and test integrated photonics and electro-optical experiments and prototypes.
  • Develop experimental setups, methodologies, and prototypes to investigate and validate new concepts and technologies.
  • Perform data collection, analysis, interpretation, and documentation of experimental results.
  • Troubleshoot experimental systems and identify solutions to technical challenges.
  • Present research findings, experimental results, and technical recommendations to team members and other stakeholders.
  • Prepare technical documentation, including invention disclosures and research reports.
  • Contribute to the development of technical and research proposals.
  • Author and contribute to publications in peer-reviewed scientific and technical journals.
  • Attend and present research at scientific and technical conferences.

HRL's silicon quantum processor runs autonomously with cryogenic control chip at –450°F

HRL Laboratories has published research in Nature demonstrating a self-operating quantum processor. The system features a custom CMOS controller operating at –450°F inside a cryostat, which autonomously runs error correction for their 18-qubit devices without real-time input from room-temperature electronics. The architecture uses a new high-density superconducting ribbon cable that transmits control signals to qubits whilst preventing heat transfer. The system achieves control errors ten times lower than previous demonstrations with this qubit type, with operations completing in under a microsecond. This marks the first time error correction has been executed entirely by a cryogenic controller. HRL aims to build quantum computers using standard microchip production lines, keeping costs low for broader commercial and scientific applications. IBM recently announced a definitive agreement to acquire HRL to strengthen its quantum computing capabilities.

IBM buys HRL Laboratories to add electron spin qubits to quantum strategy

IBM has agreed to acquire HRL Laboratories, a quantum computing research lab jointly owned by Boeing and General Motors. The deal adds electron spin quantum circuits to IBM's existing superconductor-based approach, giving the company a dual-track quantum computing strategy. HRL, formerly the research arm of Hughes Aircraft and based near Malibu, California, specialises in electron spin qubits. These circuits can be manufactured much smaller than superconducting circuits using the same chip fabrication equipment. Jay Gambetta, director of IBM Research, said the company believes the future lies in electron spins, superconductors, or a combination of both. HRL's team will begin producing chips at IBM's New York facility. Boeing and GM will continue partnering with IBM on quantum technologies after the transaction. The acquisition follows Google's earlier move to add neutral atom technology to its quantum computing portfolio.

HRL Laboratories launches palm-sized navigation sensor with near navigation-grade accuracy

HRL Laboratories has introduced the AXI-R100, an inertial measurement unit delivering near navigation-grade accuracy in a palm-sized package. The device is now available for pre-production orders. Using silicon micro-electro-mechanical systems technology, HRL's gyroscopes exceed tactical-grade performance levels whilst being smaller and lighter than conventional sensors. The unit is designed for defence, aerospace and automotive applications, including missile guidance systems, drone navigation and autonomous vehicles. The company designed the AXI-R100 using high-volume automotive methodologies to enable scaling for mass production whilst maintaining performance superiority over traditional tactical-grade sensors. HRL has spent over 20 years advancing MEMS inertial sensing technologies. The California-based laboratory is jointly owned by Boeing and General Motors.
