Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited college of law with a Juris Doctor degree.
  • Incumbents must maintain certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid.
  • Must be able to lift materials or equipment weighing up to 20 pounds or less.
Responsibilities
  • Perform independent research of legal issues as directed by the judge and develop interpretations of legal questions.
  • Research and verify points of law cited by attorneys in memoranda to the judge.
  • Provide input to and discuss pending cases and decisions with the judge.
  • Participate in conferences and discussions between trial attorneys and the judge.
  • Assist in writing and preparing judicial opinions, decisions, and citations.
  • Assist in processing and tracking complex litigation assigned to the court.
  • Maintain the judge's law library and assemble and update appropriate documents.
  • Assist in emergency evacuations as directed in the Disaster/Emergency Response Procedures manual.
  • Perform other tasks to aid in the administration of the judge's docket and caseload.
  • Prepare the courtroom for the day's cases.
  • Ensure that all parties involved in proceedings are present.
  • Maintain order in the courtroom during court sessions.
  • Maintain the integrity of the jury and ensure that no outside person communicates with jurors while they deliberate.
  • Escort jurors and witnesses to and from the courtroom.
  • Attend to the needs of the jury, answer non-legal questions, and provide assistance.
  • Contact attorneys, witnesses, and others required for court sessions by telephone.
  • Call jurors by telephone to appear for jury duty at the next day's session.
  • Maintain the jury deliberation room in an orderly manner.
