Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Completion of a Medical Assistant Program or Med Ed Program, or one year of clinical experience, is required.
  • Basic Life Support certification must be obtained within 30 days of hire.
  • A state criminal background check and, if applicable, a federal background check are required for regulated areas.
  • The employee must be able to lift, move, stoop, reach, stand, walk, and carry materials and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
  • The employee must be able to position and/or lift patients and stand or walk for 4 to 12 hours per day.
  • The employee must be able to respond quickly to varying demands from providers and patients.
Responsibilities
  • Perform duties related to patient care and treatment as directed by attending providers in an outpatient clinic.
  • Provide clerical and clinical support to medical staff in the assigned unit.
  • Support medical staff to meet patients’ needs and ensure efficient operation of the outpatient unit.
  • Assist providers with requisitions and forms for patient examinations or testing, help ensure test results are available, and assist patients and providers during medical office visits.
  • Administer prescribed medication under the supervision of the attending provider.
  • Perform qualitative and quantitative tests and examinations of specimens.
  • Obtain and document patient specimens as ordered.
  • Document and report test results to the medical provider.
  • Perform assigned point-of-care testing after training and skills testing, and maintain quality-control testing and logs.
  • Schedule ancillary testing and coordinate diagnostic or therapeutic procedures.
  • Act as a chaperone during medical examinations.
  • Ensure medical records and test results are available for visits, including records from referring physicians, and review records for correct order and completeness.
  • Monitor the nurse call system, relay information, and transmit telephone-call information to appropriate staff.
  • Provide information and assistance to patients, families, and visitors as instructed by the physician.
  • Participate in the Quality Assurance Program.
  • Generate patient charge data according to outpatient procedures.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment, prepare orders, report supply needs to the supervisor, and use and care for printers, embossers, and computers.
  • Schedule and coordinate new and return appointments using the computerized system according to clinic policies and procedures.
  • Register patients, collect identification and billing information, enter data into the computer, obtain charts and fee sheets, and obtain release-of-information and treatment-consent signatures.
  • Assist the Registration Specialist with depositing money and late-night coverage.
  • Assist the Manager or Supervisor with unit correspondence using computer software.
  • Process and mail letters to patients.
  • Work in a clinical outpatient environment with frequent exposure to biohazards and communicable disease.
Desired Qualifications
  • Registration or certification as a Medical Assistant.
  • One year of experience as a Medical Assistant or in patient care.
