About the company

Johnson & Johnson develops prescription medicines and makes medical devices for hospitals, and unlike most big drugmakers, it runs both businesses under one roof. In 2015, its Darzalex became the first antibody drug approved for multiple myeloma, a blood cancer. Its medicines treat cancer, immune diseases such as psoriasis, and mental illnesses such as depression, and patented drugs bring in most of its sales. Its MedTech unit makes heart pumps, catheters that treat irregular heartbeats, surgical sutures, and Acuvue contact lenses. It was founded in 1886 to make sterile surgical dressings, is based in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and spun off its consumer brands, such as Tylenol and Band-Aid, as Kenvue in 2023.

  • Orthopedics is leaving J&J: in September 2026, it was negotiating a $20 billion sale to buyout firm Apollo.
  • Baby powder suits remain costly: in July 2026, J&J agreed to pay $5.5 billion to end about 76,000 cancer claims.

What makes Johnson & Johnson unique

  • Its debt is rated safer than America's: S&P's top AAA rating goes to only two US companies, J&J and Microsoft.
  • Employees rank above shareholders: J&J's 1943 Credo lists duties to patients, then staff and communities, with stockholders last.
  • Its psoriasis pill is a first: Icotyde, approved March 2026, blocks an immune signal rivals target only by injection.

Smith & Nephew's $22B talks to buy J&J's orthopaedics unit collapse over who would lead

Smith & Nephew's merger talks with Johnson & Johnson (J&J) over its orthopaedics unit collapsed over who would lead the combined company, the Financial Times reported. The sides had reportedly agreed on the main financial terms and the deal structure. J&J wanted Namal Nawana, who runs its orthopaedics unit and formerly led Smith & Nephew, to lead the business. Smith & Nephew wanted current chief executive officer Deepak Nath to stay. Smith & Nephew's offer valued J&J's hip and knee unit at up to $22 billion, almost double its own market value. J&J shareholders would have owned 50.1% of the combined company. J&J is leaning toward spinning off the unit as DePuy Synthes, targeting mid-2027. Reuters reported the unit sought around $20 billion and drew private equity interest. Both companies declined to comment.

JNJ rated buy with $289 target as pharma growth of 8% outpaces MedTech's 2.5%

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) earns a "buy" rating from 24/7 Wall St., with a 12-month price target of $288.66. That implies 11.48% upside from the $258.93 close on October 20. Growth is coming from pharma. Innovative Medicine sales rose 7.9% last quarter, while MedTech grew 2.5%. The analyst says the stock hinges on whether devices can close that gap. Third-quarter sales reached $25.4 billion. Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) were $2.59, but GAAP EPS fell to $0.09 after about $7 billion of charges, mostly tied to a proposed talc settlement and two deals. Management cut adjusted EPS guidance to $11.05 to $11.15. The bull case is $302.93, or 17% upside. Tremfya grew 68%, and management expects it to become a $10 billion-plus franchise.

Johnson & Johnson and Amgen beat the market in 2026, but can the dividend stocks keep going?

Johnson & Johnson and Amgen, two dividend stocks that have beaten the broader market this year, could suit investors bracing for a possible crash. J&J's latest quarter beat expectations, and it slightly raised its 2026 guidance. But its medtech unit is struggling, as demand for the Impella heart pump has fallen amid safety questions and a US Class 1 recall. Long-term, it has new drugs, a robotic surgery system approved in the US, and a proposed $5.5 billion talc settlement. It is a Dividend King with 64 straight years of payout increases. Amgen's second-quarter revenue rose 10% to $10.1 billion, despite pressure on Tavneos and falling denosumab sales. It has raised payouts 152% over a decade and offers a 2.3% forward yield, against 1.1% for the S&P 500.
