Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in a business-related field, finance, and/or accounting is required.
  • At least five years of professional experience in positions of increasing responsibility in accounting or finance is required.
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting methodologies is required.
  • Working knowledge of budgeting principles and practices, including spreadsheet software, is required.
  • Working knowledge of general ledger and reconciliation practices is required.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel is required.
  • An appreciation and respect for the Catholic Church and its teachings is required.
  • Knowledge of and respect for the Catholic Church, its teaching, and mission is required.
  • The ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with the Director of Operations is required.
  • Excellent analytical skills, including the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions, are required.
  • The employee must be willing to work evenings and weekends as needed and function well under pressure.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain a system for accounting for financial transactions by establishing a chart of accounts and following diocesan bookkeeping policies and procedures.
  • Maintain subsidiary accounts by verifying, allocating, and preparing transactions for Diocesan Shared Accounting Services posting.
  • Balance subsidiary accounts by reconciling entries.
  • Review the Diocesan-prepared general ledger for accuracy.
  • Review the weekly Diocesan Shared Accounting Services package to ensure transactions are properly processed and recorded, and prepare the weekly packet when the Accounting Assistant is absent.
  • Balance the general ledger by preparing a trial balance and reconciling entries.
  • Assist the Director of Operations with employee timecard accuracy and approvals, payroll submissions, payroll preparation, associated taxes and reports, and check distribution.
  • Prepare bi-weekly, quarterly, and annual payroll reconciliations.
  • Verify the accuracy of information in Paylocity, W-2 forms, and 1099 forms.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial statements and other reports for the parish and Diocese, including explanations of fluctuations and budget variances.
  • Report parish finances to the Director of Operations.
  • Prepare, administer, and review the budget process in collaboration with the Pastor, Director of Operations, and Finance Committee.
  • Serve as the parish liaison with Diocesan Shared Accounting Services by reviewing codes and accounts payable, reviewing and approving cash collection transactions, and reviewing monthly and periodic reporting with Diocesan Shared Accounting Services staff.
  • Assist the Director of Operations with employee enrollment in Diocesan benefit plans and provide ongoing information and documentation to employees.
  • Assist the Director of Operations with questions and paperwork for new and terminating employees.
  • Assist with employment actions in the human resources information system and maintain accurate employment and pay records.
  • Respond to employee payroll inquiries.
  • Supervise the Accounting Assistant and purchasing activities.
  • Provide day-to-day guidance and oversight of subordinates and promote and recognize performance.
  • Hire, train, supervise, motivate, and develop the Accounting Assistant; manage schedule and workflow.
  • Attend Diocesan-required meetings and workshops.
  • Assist with coordination of parish property and liability insurance and workers' compensation in collaboration with the Diocesan Risk Manager.
  • Comply with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying requirements, enforcing adherence, filing reports, and advising management on needed action.
  • Prepare, tabulate, and analyze regular or on-demand reports; compile or monitor administrative and statistical data; perform research; make calculations; analyze data and identify trends; prepare or generate reports; and maintain records.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing professional networks, and participating in professional societies.
  • Perform moderately complex work under limited supervision while exercising discretion in processing sensitive or confidential matters.
  • Perform additional projects as required by the Director of Operations.
