About the job

Requirements
  • Three or more years of experience in a designer role in an engineering or manufacturing environment involving electrical distribution equipment; transformer experience is preferred.
  • Proficiency in engineering design and analysis tools, such as computer-aided design, finite element analysis, simulation software, productivity software, and enterprise resource planning software.
  • Proficiency in distribution transformer design, associated manufacturing processes, and applicable industry standards such as ANSI, IEEE, IEC, and CSA.
  • Sound understanding of electrical wiring and transformer operating principles; basic understanding of sheet metal and tank fabrication is a plus.
  • Basic project management skills and the ability to handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including explaining technical concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work under supervision and take guidance.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and validate transformer electrical configurations, including high- and low-voltage winding arrangements such as delta, wye, and series/parallel, impedance, and insulation coordination for voltage classes up to 35 kV.
  • Check electrical designs against material characteristics and performance criteria, including core and load losses, impedance and voltage regulation, flux and current densities, dielectric withstand, and basic insulation level.
  • Define and specify major components, including tap changers, dual-voltage switches, bushings, arrestors, fusing, terminal arrangements and types, and accessories such as pressure-relief devices and gauges.
  • Review and prepare technical design documents, including connection diagrams, nameplate data, tap changer and switch wiring, and bills of materials for electrical components.
  • Interpret and apply relevant industry standards, including IEEE, CSA, and DOE, to ensure compliance.
  • Participate in design reviews and root cause analysis of production or design issues.
  • Contribute to standardization of transformer designs and development of design tools, templates, and best practices.
  • Stay updated on evolving industry standards and participate in technical events as required.
  • Support certification and testing requirements, including losses, dielectric, short circuit, and impulse testing.
  • Coordinate with mechanical design to ensure compatibility of bushing locations, terminal clearances, and component layout configurations.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, test, and quality teams to resolve non-conformances, implement engineering changes, and validate design improvements.
Desired Qualifications
  • An associate degree or diploma in Drafting, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field.

Transformer-manufacturing company to shut down its Chilliwack facility.

Transformer-manufacturing company to shut down its Chilliwack facility. Published 11:28 am Saturday, July 11, 2026 Cam Tran is closing its Chilliwack location, which has been around for nearly 30 years, at the end of August, 2026. (CamTran.com) A transformer-manufacturing facility in Chilliwack will be shutting down at the end of August, citing economic pressures and the high cost of tariffs. Cam Tran is closing its Chilliwack location which has been around for nearly 30 years. The company was purchased by an American company two years ago. They make various transformers including overhead ones attached to hydro poles, and pad-mounted transformers often identified as green, metal boxes. Cam Tran made the announcement on July 10. "This was an extremely difficult decision because of the impact on our employees and the Chilliwack community," said Marco Barbosa, president of Cam Tran. "While a number of factors influenced this decision, including economic pressures, changing market conditions, rising costs, and tariffs, our focus is on ensuring the long-term strength and competitiveness of our business while supporting employees through this transition." Cam Tran is the largest Canadian manufacturer of distribution transformers and the largest North American producer of amorphous metal transformers. Operations at the Chilliwack facility on Charles Street will be shut down in phases over the coming months, with the expected end day to be Aug. 28. The company stated that it has informed its employees of the decision and is "committed to supporting affected team members" throughout the transition. A total of 43 jobs will be lost, according to other media reports. "We are deeply grateful for the dedication and contributions of our Chilliwack team," Barbosa added. The company has five facilities across Canada, employing more than 400 employees. Incorporated in 1982, and with its head office in Colborne, Ont., Cam Tran opened its Chilliwack facility in 1997. Cam Tran is a privately owned Canadian company specializing in manufacturing, repair and renewal of all types of oil filled distribution transformers, according to their website. Central Moloney Inc. (CMI) an Arkansas-based company acquired Cam Tran in 2024. CMI and Cam Tran operate under separate brands.
