Cambridge Mobile Telematics provides a platform that monitors driving behavior using mobile sensors to track patterns like speed, braking, and phone usage. This technology allows insurance companies to offer usage-based policies where premiums are determined by actual driving performance rather than general demographics. By providing real-time data analytics and safety rewards, the company distinguishes itself from traditional insurers that rely on static risk assessments. The company's goal is to reduce accidents and improve road safety for everyone by encouraging and rewarding safer driving habits.

Volvo wants to make you A safer driver - and lower your insurance bill. [email protected] (Iulian Dnistran) Thu, August 13, 2026 at 2:01 AM PDT An optional app will provide a safety score based on the driver's behavior, and higher scores could lead to lower insurance rates. * Volvo is taking a page out of Tesla's book when it comes to car insurance. * The Swedish automaker is launching an optional app that monitors how a car is driven. * Available on 2020-and-newer Volvos, the Safety Coach app will come up with a safety score, which could be linked to special insurance rates. Volvo is launching a new app that will monitor the driver's behavior behind the steering wheel and come up with a safety score for the previous two weeks. That score will then be used for usage-based offers from insurance companies that have partnered with Volvo, so people who get high scores in the app have the potential to slash their insurance costs. The Safety Coach app will be optional, and its rollout will begin this month in Sweden and Norway, with most Volvo models from model year 2020 getting access to the in-car app. A smartphone version will also be integrated into the Volvo Cars mobile app. Further down the road, the company aims to launch the app in the United States and other European markets, with insurance-related offers included in the rollout. The app, which is similar to Tesla's Safety Score approach, will monitor the driver's behavior in traffic, including braking, acceleration, and cornering. The app was built by Volvo Cars in collaboration with Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT), which describes itself as the world's largest telematics and AI company for safer mobility. "Our research shows that many accidents involve some form of surprise. What helps prevent that is predictability," said Mikael Ljung Aust, driver behaviour expert at Volvo Cars. "Staying within expected speed ranges and avoiding abrupt manoeuvres makes your driving easier for others to anticipate and reduces the risk of a collision. Supporting safe driver behaviours is a key piece of the puzzle we need to solve to reach zero collisions, and tools like Safety Coach can help turn these insights into safer everyday habits." After downloading the app, drivers can manage their own data. Volvo said that owners are not locked into the system after opting in for the first time, so they can opt out of sending their data to affiliated insurance companies. What's more, after opting out, drivers can opt in again at any time. In Sweden and Norway, owners who choose to share their driving behavior data will soon be able to make use of a special usage-based offer from insurance firm Volvia. The automaker has not disclosed which insurance company will handle customized offers in the U.S. when the Safety Coach app launches here. In Europe, the app is compatible with cars that have a Google-based infotainment system from model year 2020 onwards, and the same cars will likely make the cut in the U.S., too. These include the all-electric EX40, EC40, EX60, and EX90, as well as the combustion-powered XC40, S60, V60, XC60, XC90, and V90.
Insurance moves: SWBC, World Insurance, Tokio Marine and Plymouth Rock. Two AXA XL fine art specialists move to Tokio Marine Highland as World Insurance names its first chief broking officer. Four US insurance organizations have announced leadership changes this week, with two appointments carrying specific analytical weight: Tokio Marine Highland recruiting two senior specialists from the same AXA XL fine art and specie team simultaneously, and World Insurance Associates naming a chief broking officer for the first time as the acquisition-led broker invests in centralized placement capability. Tokio Marine Highland recruits AXA XL fine art team. Tokio Marine Highland has appointed Casey Santangelo (pictured, right) as president of fine art and collectibles and Natasha Fekula as senior vice president of specialty claims, both joining from AXA XL's fine art and specie operation. Two senior specialists moving together from the same competitor team is a deliberate capability acquisition rather than opportunistic recruitment - Tokio Marine Highland gains not only individual expertise but an established working relationship between its new underwriting and claims leads in a line where those two functions are closely interdependent. Santangelo joins from AXA XL where she was head of fine art and specie, managing complex risks for museums, galleries and corporate and private collections across the Americas. She brings more than 18 years of fine art insurance experience. Fekula was vice president claims manager for AXA XL's fine art and specie business, with experience leading complex claims involving high-value collections alongside reinsurance, compliance and financial reporting functions. Santangelo said she was looking forward to strengthening Tokio Marine Highland's capabilities and continuing to provide specialist service and expertise to clients and partners. World Insurance names first chief broking officer. World Insurance Associates has named Betsey Milord (pictured, center) as chief broking officer - a role that is new to the firm. World has grown primarily through acquisition of independent agencies, and the CBO appointment signals a shift toward investing in centralized broking capability and carrier relationships alongside that acquisition strategy. A firm at World's scale needs both the distribution footprint its acquisitions have built and the placement depth to use it competitively. Milord brings more than 30 years of industry experience, including a decade at Marsh leading middle market placement operations at regional and national levels, and began her career as an agency owner in the Chicago suburbs - a background that spans both the independent agency model World has acquired and the national placement infrastructure she will now build. She will lead World's broking organization, deepening carrier relationships and enhancing market capabilities nationwide. SWBC's Joan Cleveland reappointed to TALHI board. Joan Cleveland (pictured, left), president and CEO of SWBC Life Insurance Company and executive vice president of SWBC Property and Casualty Insurance Company, has been reappointed to the Texas Association of Life and Health Insurers board of directors. TALHI represents life and health insurers across Texas, whose members support more than 295,000 jobs and have invested more than $710 billion in the state. Cleveland brings more than 35 years of life and health insurance experience and more than 10 years of prior TALHI board service, and also serves on TALHI's Finance Committee and the Texas Life and Health Insurance Guaranty Association board through September 2031. Plymouth Rock appoints three to executive roles. Plymouth Rock Assurance has made three appointments to its Independent Agency Group and enterprise leadership. Gavin McPhail joins as vice president and chief data officer, leading Plymouth Rock's enterprise data strategy across underwriting, claims, risk management and customer operations, having previously served as executive vice president and general manager of risk intelligence at Fusable. Cornelius Young joins as vice president and chief claims officer for the Independent Agency Group, focused on operational excellence and accelerating data, analytics and AI across the claims lifecycle, joining from Cambridge Mobile Telematics where he was chief insurance officer after more than 13 years in claims, strategy and analytics at Liberty Mutual. Lindsay Mustard joins as vice president of customer service for the Independent Agency Group, spanning service center operations, underwriting, agency and sales operations, compliance, project management and customer experience, joining from Jenius Bank where she held senior leadership roles including head of strategy, with prior senior vice president roles at Citizens Bank and project leader experience at The Boston Consulting Group. Andrew McElwee, president and COO at The Plymouth Rock Company, said the three appointments reflected the company's investment in leadership to drive data strategy, claims analytics and customer outcomes forward.
