About the job

Requirements
  • At least 3 years of engineering management experience managing software engineers, ideally including senior and staff-level individual contributors, with a track record of shipping products through launch.
  • At least 8 years of software engineering experience before or alongside management, with the ability to critically review design documents and pull requests, engage senior engineers on architecture, and make technical decisions when the team is split.
  • Relevant domain depth in at least one of bot detection or bot management, fraud or abuse prevention, web security, browser or client-side engineering, or high-volume API services, including understanding the adversarial nature of the problem.
  • Experience building or running measurement-driven engineering, such as test corpora, precision/recall or false-positive/false-negative tracking, regression suites, and service-level objectives, and using that data to prioritize.
  • Hands-on use of AI coding agents, with informed views on where they help and where they do not.
  • Experience working closely with product managers, researchers, and customer-facing teams, and making dependencies and trade-offs explicit.
  • Ability to write clearly, make decisions visible with reasoning, and explain detection quality and launch readiness to executives and customers.
  • The role is open across the United States, and teammates need to be authorized to work from their home location.
Responsibilities
  • Own the engineering plan for the Beta-to-general-availability-to-standalone-launch sequence, partnering with the product manager on the product requirements document, estimates, sequencing, and readiness evidence for each stage.
  • Define and prove the service operating envelope, including throughput, latency tails, rate limiting, and availability service-level objectives, before customers depend on the service.
  • Run staged rollouts for detection changes that affect customer bot rates, using feature flags, rollback plans, and clear go/no-go evidence for customer-facing teams.
  • Turn design-partner feedback and customer-reported false positives into prioritized, owned engineering work.
  • Establish and run a weekly detection-quality loop with a prioritized test corpus, automated false-positive and false-negative testing across browser and edge detection, regression coverage, and drift monitoring.
  • Drive coverage for customer-relevant automation, prioritizing AI agents and assistants and benchmarking against industry leaders according to customer exposure.
  • Guide technical work on self-hosted agents, stealth and anti-detect browser automation, and fingerprinting agent infrastructure using browser, network, and runtime evidence.
  • Evolve the classification contract to provide automation type, verified versus inferred identity, confidence, and reason codes, while measuring detection and attribution separately.
  • Manage, coach, and grow senior engineers; run hiring for additional positions, beginning with a detection research and quality engineer.
  • Set team goals against its charter and bring them to leadership for alignment; communicate decisions with reasoning before acting.
  • Establish engineering practices, including written ownership lines, repository-specific review tiers, specifications before epics, and baselines for cycle time, throughput, predictability, change failure rate, and recovery time.
  • Negotiate working agreements with the sibling team sharing the codebase and drive gradual decoupling based on what blocks independent deployments.
  • Operate the agent-first development model, including specification, coding-agent work, review-agent work, security review, and human merge; allow low-risk changes to merge on agent approval and require human review on critical paths.
  • Maintain the agent harness—including repository instructions, skills, and review personas—as infrastructure and publish it for other teams.
  • Measure the AI-native engineering model against the team's baseline, conduct 30- and 60-day reviews, and document what worked and what did not for the rest of engineering.
  • Ensure every shipped surface is contract-first, with OpenAPI in the repository, breaking-change detection in continuous integration, generated documentation and software development kits, and APIs readable by developers and AI agents.
  • Own observability for the detection service, including logs, metrics, traces, and service-level objectives.
  • In the first 90 days, finalize the team roster and ownership lines with the sibling team, establish the quality loop and engineering baselines, deliver engineering evidence for the Beta gate, and conduct the first review of the AI-native operating model.
Desired Qualifications
  • Direct experience with bot detection, bot management, or anti-automation products, such as at a content delivery network, web application firewall, fraud, or security vendor.
  • Familiarity with AI agent ecosystems, including agent frameworks, verified-agent protocols, and how agents interact with websites and APIs.
  • Experience with browser internals or headless and automation frameworks, including techniques used to detect or evade them.
  • Experience running API-first products with public OpenAPI specifications, software development kits, and model context protocol or similar agent-facing surfaces.
  • Experience forming a new team out of an existing one, including separating codebases, setting ownership lines, and maintaining a healthy relationship with a sibling team.
  • Experience in a high-growth software-as-a-service company with enterprise customers.
