Journey recreates Roman life for London Museum experience. Londinium: the making of a Roman city will be the first exhibition to show in the museum's rediscovered vaults Journey, a global design and innovation studio pioneering multidimensional experiences (MDX), is partnering with London Museum to create Londinium: the making of a Roman city. Set to open in spring next year, the free-entry exhibition draws on ten years of archaeological research into the internationally acclaimed Bloomberg Collection to bring the stories of early Roman London to life. Journey's contribution includes guest experience, exhibition design, media production and spatial storytelling, working in close partnership with audio experience designers DARKFIELD to develop the exhibition's narrative, scripts and characters. Londinium: the making of a Roman city immerses guests in the first 50 years of Roman London and imagines the confrontations, conversations, and daily dealings in this frontier settlement as it grew from a rural landscape into a bustling urban hub. Using dynamic projection and spatial soundscapes, its storytelling explores previously unseen objects from the peerless Bloomberg Collection of over 14,000 Roman artefacts, which was gifted to London Museum by Bloomberg Philanthropies in 2025. Among the objects to be shown for the first time are Roman wax writing tablets, an infant's feeding bottle, a coin from the reign of Emperor Nero, and Britain's earliest known example of Eurasian cockroach eggs, found inside a Roman bakery oven. Londinium: the making of a Roman city will be the inaugural exhibition to open in London Museum's 8000-square-foot network of underground vaults, rediscovered in 2019 during the museum's decade-long renovation of Smithfield's Victorian General Market. Sharon Ament, director, London Museum, says: "When we rediscovered the vaults, we were determined to open them up. They are so specific, so evocative, so mysterious, we saw their potential straight away. "So it makes me really rather pleased that the first exhibition inside them will be about the Londoners who created Londinium, with real artefacts from their lives from one of London's most significant recent archaeological excavations." The ambitious London Museum development project is transforming both the Victorian General Market site, set to open on 28 November, and neighbouring Poultry Market, which will launch in 2028. They wondered whether the experience could extend beyond a stunning viewpoint to become more immersive, layered, and resilient in all seasons and under all weather conditions. Journey collaborated with Hudson Yards Experiences and Tao Group Hospitality to develop a new vision for Edge NYC. The redesign shifts the attraction from a single moment at the top of a tower to a comprehensive entertainment experience, including enhanced hospitality areas. The Journey team started with experience strategy, working closely with HYE and Tao Group Hospitality to explore what set Edge NYC apart: its angular design, its use of glass and light, and its imposing view over the city. From this, they created a new experiential framework for the destination. The strategy focuses on a visual language inspired by prisms and triangles, mirroring the building's geometry and providing a metaphorical perspective for rediscovering New York. The concept envisioned visitors moving through a sequence of environments that distort and reframe the city, gradually unveiling it in a panoramic view, for a kaleidoscopic exploration of the New York skyline. This strategic direction led to a new suite of immersive experiences with seven interactive environments and hero moments that blend sound, light, and architecture to create evolving sensory encounters throughout the day and across seasons, delivered by partners Moment Factory and SoftLab. Instead of reflecting the sleek architectural style of the observation deck, the hospitality areas needed a warmer, more luxurious ambience, perfect for dining, cocktails, and nightlife. Journey's strategy involved reimagining Edge's sharp, angular design through a more sophisticated material palette and use of dynamic lighting. This resulted in spaces that resemble jewel boxes hanging above the city. Simultaneously, the design had to balance the varied expectations of multiple stakeholders with the unique brand identity and operational needs of Tao Group Hospitality. The final result. The result is a series of spaces that expand the Edge NYC brand into new levels of experience. From immersive installations and sensory settings to refined dining and nightlife, the location now provides a fully multidimensional experience that begins at arrival and continues to the stunning final view.
