What we´re looking for:

GHD is looking for Mechanical graduates to join our Markham Office. Our Building Mechanical Design group provides engineering support primarily to Canada central and west, but also to the wider network of over 10,000 GHD staff world-wide. We provide design work for all aspects of mechanical building services, and coordinate with all other core disciplines to provide seamless, multi-discipline project delivery all out of our Canadian design center. Our projects can range from Transportation, Buildings, Educational centers, water and wastewater to agricultural and food services, to industrial facility support. As a result, we see a large variety of projects and new challenges on a regular basis in sizes ranging from a few thousand to several million in engineering fees. As a result, we need people who can stay flexible in their thinking and provide input and adaptation of designs over a wide range of topics.

As a Graduate Designer, you will work alongside experienced engineers, designers, and project teams to support the development of design documentation, technical drawings, and digital models across a diverse range of projects. Applying the knowledge gained through your studies, you will help deliver accurate and high-quality design outputs that support project objectives and contribute to successful outcomes for our clients and communities.

You will gain hands-on experience using industry-standard design and drafting tools while developing your understanding of design processes, project delivery, and documentation best practices in a real-world consulting environment. Through mentorship, collaboration, and exposure to a variety of projects, you will build your technical capability, attention to detail, and understanding of how quality documentation supports the delivery of effective engineering solutions.

Working with an energetic and high performing team, this position offers a variety of work and will see you involved in:

• Mechanical System Design: Create detailed 2D & 3D models of mechanical systems, including HVAC, plumbing, Sanitary & Storm, fire protection and fire alarm, and Controls Schematics, using designing & drafting software (AutoCAD, Revit MEP). Ensure accuracy, clash detection, and coordination with other building components.

• System Integration and Coordination: Collaborate with architects, engineers, and other stakeholders to integrate mechanical systems seamlessly within the overall building design. Coordinate with the design team to resolve clashes, conflicts, and design inconsistencies.

• Design Optimization and Analysis: Analyze and optimize mechanical system designs for efficiency, sustainability, and compliance with applicable codes and standards. Identify potential conflicts or performance issues and propose design modifications or alternative solutions.

• Technical Documentation: Prepare and review technical drawings and schedules for mechanical systems. Ensure compliance with project requirements, industry standards, and regulatory guidelines.

• Collaboration and Communication: Effective communication and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including architects, structural and electrical engineers. Participate in design coordination meetings, provide input, and contribute to problem-solving discussions.

• Quality Assurance: Conduct quality checks and reviews of mechanical models to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to project goals and standards. Address design deficiencies and provide recommendations for improvement.

• Continuous Improvement and Innovation: Stay abreast of industry trends, advancements, and emerging building services design and modelling technologies. Explore and implement innovative modelling techniques and tools to enhance productivity and efficiency.

• Applications Software Maintenance: Monitor and identify less-complex software defects and suggest corrections for approval by more senior colleagues to maintain fully functioning applications software.
• Data Collection and Analysis: Extract relevant data from information provided by others, and input it into spreadsheets or standard formats.
• Design and Conceptualization: Support others by performing prescribed design activities using existing procedures.
• Operating Machine or Equipment: Operate semi-complex equipment and machines, prioritizing routine tasks to improve efficiency and adjusting multiple related variables to resolve production problems.
• Operational Compliance: Develop working knowledge of the organization's policies and procedures and of regulatory codes and codes of conduct relevant to own work, adhering to mandatory procedures to ensure own work is undertaken to the required standards.
• Personal Capability Building: Develop and maintain excellent process or technical skills by participating in assessment and development planning activities as well as formal and informal training and coaching.
• Product and Solution Development: Support others by carrying out simple product development or engineering tasks, such as gathering data or preparing documents. Involves following established procedures.
• Quality Assurance Testing: Perform a specified range of tests to verify that specifications are met and to reject nonconforming material or articles.
• Solutions Analysis: Assess compliance with established standards and protocols for routine inquiries.

What you will bring to the Team

• A recent or upcoming degree completion in a relevant discipline for the role (Mechanical discipline).

• Basic to intermediate proficiency in design and drafting software such as AutoCAD and Revit MEP. 

• Ability and willingness to learn and apply engineering design tools in a professional environment, including AutoCAD and Revit MEP.

• 0-2 years of experience related to the role

• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to think critically and approach challenges with curiosity.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in diverse and multidisciplinary teams.

• A proactive attitude, willingness to learn, and commitment to continuous professional development.

Salary: Hourly Rate for Markham: $30.- Salary Range is based on the preferred work location. If the selected candidate´s location differs, changes to the salary range may apply.
