Shein warns Europe sales could fall 14% as $99M Q1 loss follows US tariff hit

Shein has warned that European sales could decline as US tariffs continue to impact its business, according to IPO filings submitted ahead of its Hong Kong listing. The fast-fashion retailer's US revenue fell 3% in 2025 and 14% in the first quarter of 2026 after it passed tariff costs to consumers through price increases starting in May 2025. Europe, which accounts for 35% of Shein's revenue, may face similar pressures. The EU scrapped its low-value parcel exemption in July, introducing a €3 levy per product category. European sales growth already slowed to 9% in 2025 from 33% the previous year. Companywide profit dropped 39% in 2025, with a $99 million loss in the first quarter reversing a $395 million profit from the year-earlier period. Shein now seeks a $30 billion to $40 billion valuation, down from $98.2 billion in 2022.

Shein's US sales plunge 14% as tariffs force price hikes, threatening $100B valuation and business model

Shein is facing significant challenges as new tariffs and the removal of duty-free shipping exemptions severely impact its low-price business model, according to documents filed for its Hong Kong IPO. US sales declined more than 3% between 2024 and 2025, plunging 14% in the first quarter after the company raised prices to offset tariff costs. The discount retailer now faces tax rates between 10% and 87.5%, up from 0% to 62.5% previously. Company-wide profitability fell 39% between 2024 and 2025, with first-quarter profits swinging to a $99 million loss. Europe, Shein's largest market accounting for 35% of 2025 revenue, could face similar impacts after implementing new flat-rate fees. Growth there has already slowed to 9% in 2025 from 33% the previous year. In response, Shein is expanding its services business, including brand enablement services that leverage its supply chain infrastructure, which grew nearly 40% in 2025.

Shein scales back Vietnam operations, returns focus to China after warehouse experiment fails

Chinese fast-fashion retailer Shein is drastically scaling back its Vietnamese operations just over a year after establishing a 15-hectare warehouse facility near Ho Chi Minh City. The site, once the country's largest bonded logistics hub employing thousands, has shrunk to 6 hectares with mass layoffs beginning in April. The retreat follows major shifts in US trade policy. Shein initially expanded to Vietnam in late 2024 after Donald Trump's re-election raised fears of trade war escalation, which materialised with US tariffs on Chinese goods reaching 145% by April 2025. However, the company's plans unravelled when Trump ended the de minimis duty-free exemption for shipments under $800 from all countries in July 2025. The move undermined Shein's business model, which relied heavily on small parcel shipments. Shein is now refocusing on its southern China manufacturing base and pursuing a Hong Kong IPO.

Shein targets $30B–$40B Hong Kong IPO, down from $98B 2022 valuation amid FTC probe and tariffs

Shein is set to list on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange as early as mid-August, targeting a valuation of $30 billion to $40 billion — a steep discount from the $98 billion it commanded in 2022. The fast fashion retailer's compressed valuation reflects mounting regulatory and cost pressures. The FTC is investigating the company for consumer protection violations. Meanwhile, revenue grew just 8% to $42 billion in 2025, down from 20.7% growth the year before. Shein faces a $99 million tariff-related loss as the de minimis duty exemption ends, exposing its merchandise to tariffs ranging from 10% to 87.5%. US revenue fell 14.3% to $2.04 billion for the quarter. The company must first secure Beijing's approval to list in Hong Kong, after earlier attempts to go public in New York and London failed.
