Requirements
  • At least 3 years of professional printed circuit board layout or electronic computer-aided design experience.
  • Proficiency with Altium Designer or similar professional printed circuit board design tools.
  • Experience laying out multi-layer printed circuit boards.
  • Strong understanding of printed circuit board fabrication, assembly processes, component footprints, and manufacturing documentation.
  • Ability to interpret schematics and work closely with electrical engineers to implement design intent.
  • Understanding of printed circuit board design principles, including component placement, routing strategy, grounding, power distribution, and layer stack-up development.
  • Understanding of signal integrity concepts, including electromagnetic interference and electromagnetic compatibility considerations, coupling and crosstalk mitigation, impedance control, shielding, and isolation.
  • Working knowledge of applicable IPC standards and guidelines and the workmanship requirements associated with IPC Class 1, 2, and 3 electronic assemblies.
  • Experience creating fabrication and assembly output packages.
  • Ability to manage multiple board designs or revisions concurrently and work effectively in a fast-paced, cross-functional engineering environment.
Responsibilities
  • Perform printed circuit board layout for digital, analog, mixed-signal, power, and safety-critical electronics.
  • Collaborate with electrical engineers to understand schematics, design intent, routing constraints, and critical circuit requirements.
  • Work with mechanical engineers to define board outlines, connector placement, keep-in and keep-out zones, mounting features, and packaging constraints.
  • Create and maintain printed circuit board footprints, symbols, component libraries, and electronic computer-aided design documentation.
  • Support design-for-manufacturing, design-for-test, and design-for-assembly reviews.
  • Generate fabrication and assembly outputs, including Gerbers, ODB++, pick-and-place files, drawings, stack-up notes, and assembly documentation.
  • Interface with printed circuit board fabrication and assembly vendors to resolve manufacturing questions and improve board quality.
  • Participate in printed circuit board design reviews and contribute to layout standards, checklist development, and release practices.
  • Support engineering change orders, revision updates, and configuration-controlled release packages.
  • Help improve electronic computer-aided design workflows, library discipline, and documentation practices as the team scales.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with high-density, mixed-signal, high-reliability, or safety-critical printed circuit board designs.
  • Experience with rigid-flex printed circuit board design.
  • Experience with Altium library management, component lifecycle tracking, or electronic computer-aided design standards development.
  • Familiarity with design-for-manufacturing, design-for-test, bed-of-nails test points, production test access, and panelization.
  • Experience with IPC standards related to printed circuit board design, component creation and footprints, fabrication, or assembly.
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers, printed circuit board fabricators, and assembly houses.
  • Background in defense, aerospace, medical device, robotics, or other high-reliability electronics environments.
  • Experience supporting engineering change orders, configuration management, and production release workflows.

Kraken Kinetics develops high-performance warheads and fuzing systems for unmanned and autonomous military platforms. The company designs and manufactures mission-tailored kinetic munitions (including tungsten fragmentation, shaped charge, EFP, thermobaric, and reactive materials) and advanced fuzing, with products like the Terminus warhead that uses a LIDAR height-of-burst sensor to defeat vehicle armor. Its weapons are deployed on drones and in drone swarms, and the firm has demonstrated multi-target EFP strikes controlled by a single operator. The organization leverages a background from a government group that pioneered kinetic drones for the DoD, enabling rapid development and scalable production through proprietary design tools. Kraken Kinetics aims to provide modular, cost-effective, and scalable munitions for small drones and to secure large-scale production contracts for national security applications.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Pentagon selected Kraken for the April 2026 Lethality Prize Challenge.
  • Ukraine deployment and U.S. Army, Marine, and Ranger demos validate Terminus.
  • Demand rose as DoD targets 300,000 small drones over two years.

What critics are saying

  • Phase III Drone Dominance starts November 2026; losers get cut from procurement.
  • ITAR and EAR compliance needs a new Export Control Manager in Pinehurst.
  • Northrop Grumman and five winners pressure pricing, standardization, and customer access.

What makes Kraken Kinetics unique

  • 2023-founded Kraken Kinetics sells warheads, not airframes, for Group 1 drones.
  • Terminus combines EFP lethality with LIDAR height-of-burst against cage armor.
  • Auterion used Kraken EFP warheads in January 2026 live-fire swarm strikes.
