CMA CGM, Bureau Veritas & SDARI partner on ai-powered container vessel concept.

CMA CGM, Bureau Veritas & SDARI partner on ai-powered container vessel concept. A new project has been launched to explore how AI, automation and decision-making systems can be built for container vessels while keeping human intervention and oversight. The three companies, Shanghai Merchant Ship Design, CMA CGM, and Bureau Veritas, signed the contract at SMM 2026 in Hamburg, Germany. The main focus is on making a system which can reduce the workload of the crew members on a container ship, boost safety and maritime security, lead to less fuel consumption and enhance overall performance and efficiency. Latest videos. To achieve this, the companies will first conduct a study to develop the concept using AI, digitalisation and decision-support tech. Next, the developers will choose which onboard systems are suitable for what level of AI assistance before finally developing a concept in detail and implementing it on a trial basis. Bureau Veritas will offer risk assessments, oversee regulations and safety features, and provide classification services. SDARI will assist in designing the ship concept, its engineering and smart-ship features, while CMA CGM will oversee whether all the operational needs and benchmarks are met, and provide use cases and inputs whenever necessary. After this, the companies plan to clearly set out and explain the duties of the crew members who will work alongside the new ship-design concept assisted by AI. Similarly, the roles will be designated for shore-based employees. The design will be tested against different scenarios as per rules set by Bureau Veritas. Executive VP of CMA CGM Christine Cabau Woehrel said that crew members will be involved in developing the revolutionary technology right from the beginning. CMA CGM Partners with BV and SDARI on AI-Assisted Ship Project.

CMA CGM Partners with BV and SDARI on AI-Assisted Ship Project. September 5, 2026 CMA CGM, Bureau Veritas (BV) and Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI) have launched a joint development project to explore an AI-assisted container vessel concept aimed at improving ship efficiency, safety and crew support while keeping humans firmly in operational control. The partners signed the Joint Development Project (JDP) agreement during the SMM maritime exhibition in Hamburg on September 3, 2026. The initiative will examine how digitalisation, artificial intelligence and onboard decision-support systems can be integrated into containership operations. Focus on assisted, not autonomous, operations. The project is being developed around an "assisted vessel" concept rather than fully autonomous navigation. The objective is to use technology to support crews in making operational decisions, improve energy efficiency and reduce repetitive workloads without removing human oversight. The study will initially identify key onboard functions that could benefit from different levels of digital assistance. These could include operational and energy-management functions, with the partners assessing the appropriate balance between automated support and human decision-making. Roles of the three partners. CMA CGM will contribute operational requirements, use cases and the shipowner perspective, helping ensure that the technologies examined are relevant to real-world container shipping. SDARI will provide its expertise in merchant ship design, systems engineering and smart-ship technologies, while Bureau Veritas will contribute independent expertise in safety, classification, risk assessment, human factors and regulatory requirements. The collaboration is intended to create a technology-neutral vessel concept that can be assessed from technical, commercial and regulatory perspectives. Safety and human oversight central to study. A major element of the project will be examining how crew responsibilities should evolve as digital assistance becomes more capable. The partners will develop a Concept of Operations and Basis of Design defining crew roles, assisted functions and potential shore-based support. Human-factor and safety assessments will be conducted using a risk-based approach aligned with Bureau Veritas rules. This is intended to ensure that AI-enabled functions enhance rather than undermine safe ship operations. Towards Approval in Principle. Following the initial assessment, the selected vessel concept will undergo detailed evaluation covering technical, safety, regulatory and commercial feasibility. The final phase is expected to produce technical specifications and an Approval in Principle (AiP) application, along with high-level capital and operating cost estimates and a development roadmap. The initiative reflects the shipping industry's growing interest in using AI and digital decision-support technologies to improve vessel efficiency and safety while ensuring that seafarers remain central to operational decision-making.

CMA CGM maps out AI-assisted containership.

CMA CGM maps out AI-assisted containership. CMA CGM, Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute and Bureau Veritas have launched a joint project to develop an assisted containership concept built around artificial intelligence and onboard decision support. The technology-neutral study will identify which navigation, energy-management and operational functions should receive greater automation and how much control should remain with the crew. CMA CGM will contribute operational requirements and use cases. SDARI will handle ship design, systems engineering and smart-ship technology, while Bureau Veritas will cover classification, safety, human factors and regulatory risk. The partners intend to produce a Concept of Operations and Basis of Design defining the roles of crew, assisted functions and shore-based support. A selected concept will then be developed into technical specifications and submitted for approval in principle. The work will also include high-level capital and operating-cost estimates and a development roadmap. The project is being positioned around assistance rather than crew removal. Human oversight and operational control will remain part of the design as the partners assess possible applications of the developing IMO MASS Code. No target vessel, implementation timetable, or project budget was disclosed.

Bureau Veritas, CMA CGM, SDARI to explore assisted container vessel concept.

Bureau Veritas, CMA CGM, SDARI to explore assisted container vessel concept. September 3, 2026 Bureau Veritas, CMA CGM and SDARI launch a Joint Development Project for an assisted container vessel concept at SMM. (C) Bureau Veritas Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV), CMA CGM and Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute (SDARI) have signed a Joint Development Project (JDP) agreement during SMM to develop and assess the feasibility of an assisted container vessel concept based on enhanced onboard decision-support capabilities. The project will explore how digitalization, AI enhancement and decision-support technologies can support onboard energy efficiency and operational performance, enhance the safety of the ship for crew and cargo, while also reducing crew workload and providing more effective operational support through digital-assisted support. Bringing together complementary expertise in container shipping, ship design and classification, the JDP will develop a technology-neutral assisted-vessel concept designed to increase operational efficiencies whilst maintaining appropriate human oversight and operational control. The JDP combines distinct expertise from across the industry: CMA CGM will provide operational requirements, use cases and the shipowner perspective; SDARI will contribute its expertise in merchant ship design, systems engineering and smart ship technologies; and BV will provide independent class, safety, risk-assessment and regulatory expertise. The study will assess and identify priority areas and levels of assistance across main onboard functions before developing a selected concept in detail, analyzing technical, safety, regulatory and commercial viability. This will be followed by a Concept of Operations and Basis of Design, which will define the enhanced roles of crew, assisted functions and shore-based support, with safety and human-factor assessment through a risk-based approach aligned with BV Rules. The concept will then be consolidated into technical specifications and an Approval in Principle application, alongside high-level CAPEX and OPEX estimates, as well as a development roadmap.
