Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree and three years of academic advising or related experience; a Master's degree in a related field may substitute for one year of professional work experience, and equivalent combinations of relevant education and professional academic advising experience may substitute year-for-year.
  • Knowledge of advising and counseling techniques, with the ability to build trust and provide safe, supportive opportunities for students from varied backgrounds to identify and pursue paths to graduation supporting their educational goals and post-graduation plans.
  • Ability to interact effectively and respectfully with students, faculty, and staff from diverse social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds, including understanding institutional barriers and equity gaps affecting historically underserved student populations in higher education.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and collaborative skills, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks effectively and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently.
  • Ability and willingness to occasionally travel and work some evening and weekend hours, with experience working directly with students or in student services.
  • A valid driver's license, or the ability to obtain one by the time of hire, and compliance with departmental driving standards.
  • Ability to undergo the required background check.
Responsibilities
  • Provide advanced-level professional advising for the Health Professions Student Center, including the Pre-Nursing program and potentially Pre-Pharmacy, Pre-Speech and Hearing, and Pre-Nutrition Exercise and Physiology.
  • Advise students on career choice, course choices, academic majors, and the application process for professional school.
  • Assist with program data collection and analysis for program development.
  • Assist with student recruitment and retention activities.
  • Provide workshops, teaching modules, and program assessments.
  • Represent the Health Professions Student Center in communications with Nursing and Health programs to increase matriculation rates.
  • Advise student clubs.
  • Maintain working relationships with faculty in WSU degree programs and admissions offices for professional schools at WSU and other institutions.
  • Occasionally work evenings and weekends.
