About the job

Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Engineering, or a related field is required; a master's degree is preferred.
  • At least 8 years of experience in Applied Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, or Machine Learning Engineering operating production Retrieval-Augmented Generation or large language model-based retrieval systems.
  • Experience designing large language model evaluation frameworks, including automated and human-in-the-loop methods, to measure accuracy, groundedness, and hallucination rate and track drift over time.
  • Experience instrumenting and tracing large language model and Retrieval-Augmented Generation pipelines using tools such as LangSmith, Arize, or Phoenix; debugging production issues; carrying on-call ownership of quality or security incidents; and feeding production signals back into evaluation and freshness strategy.
  • Experience defending large language model systems against prompt injection and data leakage, including isolation, sandboxing, and authorization enforcement at the retrieval layer.
  • Strong command of vector databases and retrieval libraries such as LangChain, LlamaIndex, or FAISS, and deep fluency in end-to-end retrieval pipelines.
  • Expert-level Python proficiency and strong SQL proficiency.
  • Experience optimizing large language model systems for cost and latency at production scale, including context compression, prompt caching, and dynamic context windowing.
  • Experience designing episodic or long-term memory for conversational agents, including what persists, how it is compressed, and how it is retrieved.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, high-ambiguity environment and making principled decisions with incomplete information.
Responsibilities
  • Build and own the evaluation framework for retrieval and generation quality, including benchmarks, golden datasets, human-in-the-loop review, and production feedback signals, and use it to continuously audit the retrieval pipeline and close the gap between retrieved content and agent needs.
  • Instrument the retrieval-to-answer path end to end so that poor answers can be traced to a specific retrieval, chunk, or prompt decision, and take operational responsibility for triage, rollback, and root-cause follow-up when production quality degrades.
  • Design re-indexing and cache-invalidation strategies so fulfillment and sales data reflect real-time state rather than stale snapshots.
  • Defend the generation layer against prompt injection and context leakage by isolating untrusted content, sandboxing tool outputs, and enforcing that agents do not surface data end users are unauthorized to see.
  • Design context compression, prompt caching, and dynamic context windowing to reduce latency and inference costs without degrading answer quality.
  • Design how agents retain, summarize, or forget information across sessions so prior context informs reasoning without overwhelming the context window.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree is preferred.

About the company

Rivian designs and builds electric pickup trucks, SUVs, and delivery vans, pairing off-road ability with electronics and software it develops itself. In 2021, its R1T became the first fully electric pickup truck on the US consumer market, ahead of larger rivals such as Ford and Tesla. It makes the R1T pickup, the R1S and R2 SUVs, and commercial vans in Normal, Illinois, and sells them directly online and in its own stores rather than through dealers. Its vehicles run on Rivian's own software, which gains features through updates sent over the internet, and most revenue comes from vehicle sales, with service and optional software adding more. Rivian was founded in 2009 and is based in Irvine, California.

Rivian faces Volkswagen software doubts as it buys Third Dimension AI, with $20.6B revenue forecast by 2029

Rivian Automotive faces investor pressure after reports that Volkswagen may use Xpeng's China-developed software in its European EVs. Rivian and Volkswagen have a joint venture (JV), so the shift could affect Rivian's software licensing hopes. Rivian has also bought Third Dimension AI, which adds 3D simulation technology for validating self-driving systems. The company plans supervised point-to-point driving by late 2026 and an Autonomy Plus rollout across its fleet in 2027. Analysts forecast revenue of $20.6 billion and earnings of $736.4 million by 2029, against a current loss of $3.2 billion. Liquidity pressure from high research and plant spending remains the main risk. Rivian's third-quarter update on October 29 is the next key checkpoint.

Rivian Q3 preview: $2B revenue expected as R2 ramp drives deliveries, but losses persist

Rivian will report third-quarter 2026 results on Thursday after the closing bell. Analysts expect a loss of 65 cents per share, 4.3% narrower than a year earlier, on revenue of about $2 billion, up 30%. The electric vehicle maker delivered 19,248 vehicles in the quarter, up 45.8% year over year and above Wall Street's estimate of 18,000. The R2, a smaller and cheaper SUV that reached customers in June, drove the rise. Management expects the R2 ramp to weigh on automotive gross profit again before scale benefits arrive in the fourth quarter. Rivian reaffirmed its 2026 target of 65,000 to 70,000 deliveries. Volkswagen recently provided a $1 billion loan at a fixed 6.03% for 10 years. Rivian shares have fallen 42% this year.

Rivian acquires UK AI startup Third Dimension to advance autonomous driving.

Rivian acquires UK AI startup Third Dimension to advance autonomous driving. The acquisition adds AI-powered 3D simulation technology to Rivian's autonomy team, supporting driver-assistance development and planned driverless R2 vehicles for Uber. Prefer on Google Discover more electric vehicle (EV electric vehicles Compare EV Models Rivian has acquired Third Dimension, a 15-person UK startup that uses artificial intelligence to transform images and video into realistic 3D environments. The startup's team will join Rivian's autonomy and AI group to support driver-assistance development and autonomous driving systems, including technology for planned robotaxis based on Rivian's R2 platform that the company intends to supply to Uber. AI-Powered simulation for autonomous driving. Founded in 2024 by CEO Tolga Kart and Piotr Sokólski, Third Dimension raised $7 million in seed funding and initially developed its technology to accelerate video game production. Rivian plans to apply the technology to automotive simulation rather than gaming. The system will convert real-world driving data collected by Rivian vehicles into simulated environments for training and validating autonomous driving systems. These simulations could help engineers recreate difficult road conditions and unusual driving scenarios without waiting for them to occur naturally. James Philbin, Rivian's vice president of autonomy and AI, told TechCrunch that the company receives more than 400,000 uploaded sequences daily from R1T and R1S vehicles, R2 vehicles and delivery vans whose owners have enabled external camera sharing. The data is aggregated and anonymized. Discover more electric vehicle Compare Cars More realistic testing environments. Traditional autonomous driving simulators often rely on game engines and synthetic data, which can struggle to reproduce the complexity of real-world road conditions. Third Dimension's technology is designed to generate simulations that more closely reflect physical environments. Rivian expects this approach to help engineers test systems against rare or challenging situations at scale, improving development and validation processes. For autonomous vehicles, such testing is particularly important because unusual road events may be difficult to encounter consistently during real-world driving. Supporting Rivian's Uber robotaxi plans. The acquisition comes as Rivian develops autonomous driving capabilities for its vehicles and prepares to supply driverless R2 vehicles for Uber's planned robotaxi operations. Simulation technology could allow Rivian to evaluate autonomous systems against a broader range of scenarios before deploying vehicles with passengers. The technology may also support the development of driver-assistance features for Rivian customers. The deal also expands Rivian's presence in the UK, where most of Third Dimension's team is based, and creates an opportunity to grow the company's London AI hub. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Discover more
