Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree is required.
  • Approximately 5–10 years of industry experience is required.
  • Experience serving as a Project Manager or higher operations leader, in a risk-related management role, or in an insurance role is required.
  • Experience reviewing and negotiating a wide variety of construction contracts, including lump-sum, construction manager at risk, design-build, lease-leaseback, and integrated project delivery agreements, is required.
  • Experience managing and mitigating construction-industry risks, particularly in general contracting for private commercial, institutional, and public entities across varied project sizes and types, is required.
  • General knowledge of construction-industry insurance programs, including high-deductible, captive, owner-controlled insurance programs, and contractor-controlled insurance programs, is required.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills are required.
  • Exceptional analytical skills are required, including the ability to assess project or company risks, develop mitigation strategies, analyze complex matters, develop solutions, and improve risk-control processes.
  • Strong negotiation, facilitation, and dispute-resolution skills are required.
  • The ability to communicate positions and ideas concisely and persuasively, verbally and in writing, is required.
  • The ability to influence without direct control and establish trusting relationships with project teams, clients, designers, and trade partners is required.

Responsibilities
  • Administer risk-management programs and initiatives for XL Construction, XL Industries, and affiliated entities.
  • Work with senior company leaders, department heads, project executives, and general superintendents to identify, assess, manage, and mitigate corporate and project risks.
  • Partner with project executives, project managers, and general superintendents to mitigate project-operations risks.
  • Develop and enhance operational tools, processes, and behaviors that reduce project-execution risk and improve project delivery.
  • Administer the Project Execution Plan process through project setup and compliance, and provide input in project meetings.
  • Lead and participate in risk-register workshops and operational-risk reviews, maintain risk registers, and manage mitigation strategies.
  • Evaluate selected projects for compliance with company procedures and performance against plan.
  • Provide training and input to project teams to improve compliance, effectiveness, and efficiency.
  • Assist project executives, general superintendents, and project teams with corrective actions, notices, and dispute resolution.
  • Assist the Vice President of Operations with projects having elevated risk levels.
  • Provide risk-management services and support for affiliated entities, including concrete and self-performed carpentry operations.
  • Ensure compliance with the company contract-review process and maintain historical contract-tracking records.
  • Review prime, subcontract, design, and miscellaneous contracts and interact with counsel, insurance personnel, and leadership to develop mutually agreeable terms.
  • Maintain standard contract templates.
  • Support senior executives in managing and resolving significant insurance claims, litigation matters, and disputes other than workers’ compensation claims.
  • Manage communications and negotiations with insurers, set reserves with insurers, and approve or negotiate assigned counsel.
  • Coordinate dispute and claim-resolution strategies with the risk-management leader, outside counsel, and leadership, and support work-plan implementation.
  • Lead or contribute to cross-departmental initiatives and support needs.
  • Ensure operations teams have appropriate insurance, bonds, and other business-risk protections in place.
  • Work with preconstruction, quality control, scheduling, cost control, safety, and staffing departments on programs and implementation activities that limit project and organizational risk.
  • Interface with corporate insurance, surety, and trade-prequalification departments to support preconstruction and project needs.
  • Develop and manage corporate and operational risk programs with the Vice President of Risk Management and other team members.
  • Track and evaluate claims histories and recommend policy and process improvements to address systemic risks.
  • Administer and track Risk Team actions and initiatives, including document control.
  • Assist with annual Risk Department business plans.
  • Lead or support development of new programs and initiatives, updates to existing programs, and future-needs planning.
  • Lead or support risk-related training programs.
  • Develop and implement XLU courses related to risk management or construction expertise.
  • Provide one-on-one risk-management coaching to project executives, project managers, and general superintendents.
  • Develop white papers and best practices.
  • Facilitate the sharing and documentation of lessons learned.
  • Prepare reports and updates for the Vice President of Risk Management, company leadership, corporate personnel, and senior project leaders regarding risks, status, and needs.
  • Manage corporate and entity governance, including license and annual state renewals.
  • Stay informed about future trends to support strategic planning, proactive risk mitigation, and organizational development.
  • Perform additional assignments as required by company needs or directed by the Vice President of Risk Management.
