Requirements
  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college is required, with equivalent education and experience potentially considered.
  • Three years of progressive professional experience in law enforcement, public safety, or security are required, including at least two years in a significant command or supervisory position.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • Applicants without the required education may substitute experience on a year-for-year basis, with 30 credit hours considered one year of college.
  • Experience in risk management, continuity planning, security, emergency management, or a related area is required.
  • Knowledge of environmental health and safety, fire safety, and workplace safety is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to respond effectively to crisis situations is required.
  • Knowledge of fire safety and environmental health regulations is required.
  • Knowledge of Federal Emergency Management Agency requirements, Clery Act requirements, and security and law enforcement operations requirements is required.
  • Applicants must provide a cover letter, resume/CV, contact information for three professional references, and official transcripts before the employment start date.
  • The position requires the ability to work all shifts, including nights and weekends, and respond to campus for emergency situations when appropriate.
Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership and operational oversight for the Department of Public Safety at Kean University's Jersey City location.
  • Ensure a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • Lead and supervise Public Safety personnel.
  • Oversee the day-to-day delivery of campus safety and security services.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate comprehensive safety programs, emergency response protocols, training initiatives, and operational standards.
  • Ensure programs and standards are consistent with university policies, best practices, and applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Collaborate with university leadership, campus departments, law enforcement, emergency response agencies, and other stakeholders to identify risks.
  • Strengthen emergency preparedness and enhance operational effectiveness.
  • Promote a culture of safety, professionalism, accountability, and service.
  • Travel and work a flexible schedule that includes evening and weekend hours.
  • Work on site at the Kean Jersey City location and remain on call for emergency situations when appropriate.
