- Graduate from an approved ultrasound program.
- Hold American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) certification and current active registration.
- Complete annual fit testing.
- Maintain valid American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR certification.
- Provide health care services to inpatients and outpatients through the application of non-ionizing radiation using sound waves to create images.
- Perform general, obstetric and gynecologic, small-parts, and vascular ultrasound procedures for interpretation by a licensed practitioner.
- Exercise professional judgment throughout assigned duties and maintain professional interactions with patients, physicians, nurses, administrators, and hospital staff.
- Verify patient identity by verbally confirming the patient’s name and date of birth and comparing the responses with the examination requisition.
- Prepare patients for procedures by explaining the procedure according to age-specific needs to gain cooperation, minimize anxiety, and optimize results.
- Position patients according to established protocols or approved physician instructions, using immobilization devices when appropriate.
- Determine proper and satisfactory ultrasound technique, including selection of appropriate probes, and support image quality control through review by a radiologist or chief technologist.
- Verify informed consent when required for specific special procedures, including biopsy examinations.
- Complete procedures in the Radiology Information System (RIS) and verify them in the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) after each study is complete and finalized.
- Perform and complete an average of 8–10 routine examinations during an eight-hour shift when conditions permit, as defined by the lead technologist.
