Requirements
  • The candidate must be a Registered Nurse with current Alabama licensure.
  • Two years of critical care experience is preferred.
  • The candidate must be available for 3–11, 11–7, weekend, and holiday call.
  • The candidate must be able to respond within 20 minutes of a call-out.
  • The candidate must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.
  • The candidate must tolerate prolonged periods of standing and walking.
  • The candidate must lift and carry 50 pounds, with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • The candidate must push a stretcher or wheelchair with an average adult patient and perform frequent stooping and occasional crouching, crawling, or kneeling.
  • The candidate must reach reasonable distances in any direction and run in emergency situations.
  • The candidate must move fingers in a coordinated manner and perceive temperature, texture, shape, and size with the fingertips.
  • The candidate must work onsite, have normal or corrected hearing and vision, and perform the duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • The candidate must work around human body fluids, disease, infection, laboratory chemicals, and hazardous materials and wear common protective or safety equipment.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinate total nursing care for patients undergoing invasive and non-invasive diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac procedures.
  • Participate in patient and family teaching and work cooperatively with other team members and disciplines to maintain professional nursing practice standards in the clinical setting.
  • Provide age-specific nursing care to adult and geriatric patients, including assessing physiologic and psychological changes, managing pharmacology, and identifying and managing safety needs.
  • Assess each assigned patient's condition before, during, and after diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac procedures, including systems review, physiological factors, and pain assessment and management.
  • Plan, direct, supervise, and evaluate nursing care according to identified patient problems.
  • Assist with performance-improvement activities by serving on performance-improvement teams, assisting with measures, and supporting and implementing necessary changes.
  • Charge medical supplies, stock rooms, and complete appropriate paperwork for each case.
  • Prepare patients for procedures, set up sterile trays, cross-train to the scrub position, and assist the physician when needed.
  • Administer medication and intravenous therapy and perform treatments according to policy and procedure.
  • Plan and provide patient or significant-other education related to invasive and non-invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures after identifying barriers to learning.
  • Follow safety practices and maintain a safe, clean environment for patients.
  • Observe patient symptoms and reactions and take appropriate action when changes occur.
  • Document patient-care assessments, evaluations, activities, and observations according to policy and procedure.
  • Assist with or institute emergency measures for sudden adverse patient developments, including cardiac arrest.
  • Attend in-service programs, required training and education, and unit, departmental, and service meetings.
  • Maintain performance, patient and employee satisfaction, and financial standards outlined in the performance evaluation.
  • Perform compliance requirements outlined in the Employee Handbook.
  • Adhere to DCH Behavioral Standards and all DCH Health System policies and procedures.
  • Use electronic mail, time and attendance software, learning management software, and the intranet.
  • Perform other assigned duties.
