A salute to Nurses - celebrating the power of nursing.

A salute to Nurses - celebrating the power of nursing. Kyra Carrasco, a registered nurse on the Ortho/Neuro Unit at Midland Memorial Hospital, has been honored with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses, a recognition that celebrates the exceptional compassion and clinical excellence nurses bring to their patients every day. Keep Watching What makes this moment especially meaningful is that Kyra has only been practicing as a registered nurse since November. In a short time, she has already made a powerful and lasting impression on patients and families she serves. Article continues below this ad Kyra was nominated by a patient who experienced firsthand the empathy, professionalism and clinical skill she brings to every interaction. The nomination described how Kyra provided reassurance during anxious moments following surgery, anticipated needs before they were spoken and created a calm and encouraging presence throughout recovery. Her nominator shared that Kyra made them feel seen, heard, safe and genuinely cared for, supporting both the patient and the patient's family during a vulnerable time. The DAISY Foundation established the DAISY Award in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died in 1999 from complications of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, an autoimmune disease. Inspired by the extraordinary care Patrick and his family received from nurses during his illness, the Barnes family created the DAISY Award as a meaningful way to thank nurses for the profound difference they make in the lives of patients and families. "At Midland Health, we see every day how nurses bring both clinical expertise and human connection to the bedside," said Lori Forbus, recognition program manager for Midland Health. "Kyra represents the heart of nursing. Even early in her career, she has demonstrated the compassion, attentiveness, and professionalism that make such a lasting impact on patients." Each month, Midland Memorial Hospital recognizes one nurse with the DAISY Award, celebrating those who go above and beyond in delivering extraordinary care. Honorees are nominated by patients, families and colleagues who wish to share stories of the nurses who made a meaningful difference in their experience. Article continues below this ad Kyra's recognition serves as a reminder that nursing excellence is not measured by years alone, but by the heart, dedication and connection a nurse brings to the bedside. Meaningful recognition programs like the DAISY Award play an important role in supporting staff engagement and strengthening a culture of appreciation across health care organizations. When caregivers feel valued for the impact they make, it reinforces the compassion and commitment that define exceptional patient care. Midland Health continues to invite patients, visitors and staff members to share stories of outstanding care through both paper and digital nomination forms available throughout the hospital and online. Midland Health selects Medaptus Assign to automate and optimize hospitalist patient assignment.

Midland Health selects Medaptus Assign to automate and optimize hospitalist patient assignment. Apr 21, 2026, 08:46 ET Midland Health chooses Medaptus Assign to improve care quality and physician satisfaction with smarter hospitalist assignments. MIDLAND, Texas, April 21, 2026 /PRNewswire/ - Medaptus today announced that Midland Health, a not-for-profit hospital in Midland County, Texas, has selected Medaptus' Assign solution to automate its patient assignment process for their hospitalist program. Previously, Midland Health relied on a manual, spreadsheet-based process to assign an average of 130 patient census every day. Each morning, patient names were pulled from Cerner, entered into Excel, and manually redistributed to balance workload percentages across hospitalists - while also determining who should receive step-down or ICU patients and preventing mid-levels from being assigned PCU or ICU cases. The resulting spreadsheet was then shared broadly across case management and clinical teams and required continuous round-robin updates throughout the day. Then, the attending physician would be updated manually back into Cerner. Medaptus Assign completely automates this process, applies Midland's complex assignment rules consistently, and provides real-time visibility into daily assignments, while integrating with their EHR to automatically update information. The Medaptus Assign solution supports Midland Health's current census of approximately 130 in-house patients and manages assignments across 22 hospitalists, including eight high-volume providers. The integration with AMiON physician scheduling enables assignments to reflect current provider availability, team load, and patient distribution, thereby promoting equity, transparency, and operational efficiency. "Before Assign, our hospitalists were relying on manual Excel updates that quickly became outdated and pulled valuable time away from patient care," said Stephen Bowerman, President and CEO, Midland Health. "With Assign, we've streamlined the process, reduced administrative burden, and enabled our providers to focus on what matters most - caring for patients." "We're thrilled that Midland Health has chosen Medaptus Assign to transform its patient assignment workflow," said Malachi Charbonneau, CEO, Medaptus. "By automating the process, integrating with AMiON scheduling, and enabling real-time team-balancing, Assign helps Midland's hospitalist leadership reclaim hours each morning and allow providers to focus on patient care rather than administrative overhead." About Midland Health Midland Health is a comprehensive health system serving West Texas and the Permian Basin, committed to delivering quality patient care, innovative programs and community-focused services. Midland Memorial to offer new stroke-prevention procedure for afib patients.

Midland Memorial to offer new stroke-prevention procedure for afib patients. Patients in the Permian Basin living with atrial fibrillation and struggling to stay on blood thinners will soon have a new treatment option close to home. Keep Watching Dr. Sulay Patel, an interventional cardiologist with Permian Cardiology, will be the first physician to perform the minimally invasive left atrial appendage occlusion procedure at Midland Memorial Hospital. Article continues below this ad "This procedure is designed for patients with atrial fibrillation on blood thinners but having difficulty tolerating them either due to frequent bleeding events or high risk of having major bleeding," Patel explained. The umbrella-shaped implant can help prevent strokes while potentially allowing patients to come off long-term blood thinners. "So, this device is designed to be implanted to seal off the left atrial appendage from the patient's circulation, to reduce their risk of stroke," Patel said. "It can also reduce their risk of bleeding because they do not need to be on long-term blood thinners approximately six months after the device is implanted." Article continues below this ad Over six months, the heart's cell lining should grow over the device, completely sealing off that area from the rest of the circulation, Patel explained. "Stroke is a really common diagnosis in this area, and atrial fibrillation is one of the most common causes of a lot of patients who have strokes," Patel said. Many patients who have strokes also have other health issues that can prevent them from taking long-term blood thinners, he added. "This is a great device to help reduce that risk of stroke in these patients who are unable to tolerate long-term blood thinners," Patel said. Article continues below this ad The recovery process after the procedure is similar to that of an angiogram or cardiac catheterization, such as a stent procedure, according to Patel. The incisions are small and made through the groin, so activity restrictions after the procedure are limited. However, patients will have to remain on some sort of blood thinner for at least the first six months as the device is healing. The procedure is done primarily by interventional cardiologists and electrophysiologists, a role that requires about eight years of training after medical school, Patel said. There is also additional training to perform the procedure, sponsored by the companies that make the devices, that takes a year to complete. Article continues below this ad Patel has completed the training and was implanting the devices at his prior job. He said he's excited to establish the program at Permian Cardiology. Patel will do the first procedure on Wednesday. He said there are already three to four patients scheduled for surgery on Wednesday. "It's exciting that we're able to offer this to patients," he said. "I encourage all patients to always discuss with their doctors about new technologies and new treatment options." He added that medicine is always evolving, and that it's important for patients to be informed about all their options. Article continues below this ad Patel said that providing this procedure to patients in West Texas is important because they previously had to travel hours to get this care, which is becoming the standard of care across the country. "This is a new step that we're taking here to try to provide comprehensive cardiology care," he said. "I think it's important that we're able to offer these procedures here locally." He added that he's excited to bring a skill set that isn't easily accessed to serve the community that he grew up in. "I'm really excited to bring a new procedure to the area, to continue to grow our program and bring access to care we haven't had here before," Patel said. Article continues below this ad For now, Patel will be the only physician performing the procedure. He said that they are open to teaching more people to do the procedure because having more doctors will increase access to care. The Permian Cardiology program is growing, Patel said. They recently established a cardiology fellowship, which brings a new element and more access to care. "Our long-term plan is to continue to grow and continue to bring modern and up-to-date care to the Permian Basin," Patel said. Article continues below this ad April 7, 2026 Kessly Salinas is a reporter at the Midland Reporter Telegram. She is from Friona, Texas and graduated from St. Edward's University with a bachelor's degree in global studies in May of 2023.
