HopeTree Family Services receives grant to help children transition into foster homes in the Richmond region. Home > HopeTree Family Services receives grant to help children transition into foster homes in the Richmond region. Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation's $2,500 investment will provide clothing, meals, and essential resources to foster families RICHMOND, VA (July 27, 2026) - HopeTree Family Services has received a $2,500 grant from Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation to help ease transitions for foster families in the Richmond region. The grant will provide clothing, hygiene items, small toys, and meals to children in foster care, while also assisting foster parents with essential expenses related to safety equipment, transportation, and school activity fees. For many children in foster care, the transition can happen quickly and often comes during one of the most uncertain moments of their lives. Many arrive with few or no personal belongings and must adjust to a new environment, new routines, and new caregivers. By providing immediate necessities and ongoing support, HopeTree aims to help children feel safe, comfortable, and supported as they adjust. "Our foster parents do the hard, everyday work of helping children heal," said April Estrada, Director of Foster Care at HopeTree Family Services. "This grant allows us to come alongside them in practical ways; whether that's clothing for a child arriving with nothing, help with transportation, or opportunities for kids to participate in activities that help them feel like kids. By reducing some of the financial and logistical burdens, we can help foster families focus on what they do best: providing stability, connection, and healing." The grant will also allow HopeTree to provide meals and care packages to foster families when a child is placed in their home unexpectedly. This additional support will help caregivers focus on caring for the child during those first critical hours. The enhanced support will increase foster parent engagement, reduce placement disruptions, and build greater confidence in trauma-informed caregiving. With more than 6,000 children in foster care in Virginia, according to the Virginia Department of Social Services, supporting foster families is essential to creating stability for children. Dominion Energy's investment will help HopeTree continue strengthening foster placements and ensuring children in the Richmond area have access to safe, supportive homes. About HopeTree Family Services HopeTree Family Services empowers children and families through a variety of services designed to build hope, resilience, and strong futures. Through its Treatment Foster Care program, HopeTree partners with foster families to provide safe, supportive, and nurturing homes for children with specialized needs. Virginia AG says Dominion-NextEra 'put a different deal on the table,' seeks merger review reset. By: Taylor Locke Posted 12:28 PM, Sep 21, 2026 RICHMOND, Va. - Virginia Attorney General Jay Jones is asking the State Corporation Commission to restart the clock on the proposed merger between Dominion Energy and NextEra, saying new commitments filed by the companies amount to an amendment of the original merger proposal - not a simple supplement to existing testimony. "The Joint Petitioners have put a different deal on the table," Jones said in the Sept. 18 SCC filing. On Sept. 14, Dominion Energy and NextEra announced new promises, including doubling bill credits, creating 1,000 new jobs, building a new office tower for NextEra employees, and maintaining current Virginia employee headcount levels for five years. Jones said those new commitments require more time for review. "By filing the Motion under Rule 240, the Joint Petitioners frame the additional testimony as a supplement to the initially filed Joint Petition. But considering the contents of the filing a supplement to testimony miscasts what is in fact an amendment of pleadings," Jones said. If the State Corporation Commission agrees, the statutory clock would reset to Sept. 14, 2026, triggering new public notice, a reopened intervention period, extended testimony deadlines, and an evidentiary hearing pushed back roughly two months - from Nov. 17, 2026 to approximately Jan. 19, 2027. Jones said the current schedule does not give intervenors enough time to fully examine the new commitments. "Simply put, the filing of significant expansions to the Joint Petitioners proposal in this extremely important case just over a month before the filing deadline for intervenor testimony does not ensure intervenors have adequate time to analyze, conduct discovery on, and compile testimony regarding these significant expansions," Jones said. One area drawing particular scrutiny is the proposed new office tower. Jones' consumer counsel has filed discovery questions about what operations would take place in the building, whether a cost-benefit analysis has been conducted, and whether the costs of owning, operating, or maintaining the tower could be passed on to Virginia ratepayers. The questions also ask whether the project could receive tax abatements. Jones is also seeking more information about the new employee headcount commitments, including whether the cost of maintaining that workforce could ultimately be passed on to ratepayers. The State Corporation Commission will now have to decide whether the new commitments are simply additional testimony or a substantial change to the merger proposal that warrants a new review timeline. A decision on the merger is currently expected in January. CBS 6 is committed to sharing community voices on this important topic. Email your thoughts to the CBS 6 Newsroom.
