The Role…

Reporting into the Publishing Systems Manager, the Publishing Systems Engineer plays a pivotal role in shaping and supporting the digital backbone of Hearst’s publishing platforms. You’ll be at the heart of our creative production process -empowering editorial teams to work seamlessly across print and digital outputs, ensuring our publishing systems are reliable, innovative, and always optimised for performance.

From day-to-day troubleshooting to driving forward system enhancements, you’ll work with cutting-edge tools such as censhare, OneVision, AWS, and Monotype. You’ll balance hands-on technical delivery with user training, knowledge sharing, and system optimisation - making sure every workflow, from a magazine layout to a digital feature, runs at its best.

This is a highly collaborative role, partnering with system providers and our internal Hearst Technology Services (HTS) team to ensure solutions are not only stable but also future-ready. Main Duties…

General Administration

• Quickly identify and resolve editorial workflow issues to keep production moving.
• Manage system updates, application configuration changes, and plan testing/go-live phases.
• Oversee configuration management using GIT.

User Support & Training

• Be the go-to expert for editorial users, guiding them through technical challenges and resolving production issues.
• Deliver onboarding and training sessions for censhare and provide hands-on support with Adobe InDesign and Photoshop.
• Use your MacOS knowledge to troubleshoot and enhance user experience.
• Keep internal documentation up to date on our Wiki, ensuring knowledge is accessible across the business.

Development

• Play an active role in projects, from scoping through to rollout.
• Contribute to new system developments and enhancements that improve workflow efficiency.

Desktop Font License Management

• Manage the entire font licensing process, from quoting and purchasing to compliance with legal and business rules.
• Oversee Monotype setup, management, and font data administration.

System Maintenance

• Administer and maintain Linux and Windows servers hosted on AWS, ensuring peak performance and cost efficiency.
• Manage and troubleshoot third-party applications that integrate into the publishing ecosystem.
