Requirements
  • A minimum of at least 3 years of director-level or higher animal shelter leadership and management experience related to the essential responsibilities, including large-scale strategy, operations, budgeting, and staffing; experience with high-intake and multiple-location or facility oversight within a municipal shelter system is preferred.
  • Familiarity and knowledge of the Los Angeles Animal Services system is required.
  • Previous experience working with unions within an animal shelter system is required.
  • Experience using statistical information to inform, develop, and implement division- and department-level strategic plans, including change management strategies and program direction, is required.
  • Advanced organizational and time-management skills and attention to detail are required.
  • A customer-centric, non-judgmental approach to engaging with adopters, partners, visitors, volunteers, and colleagues is required.
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, decision-making, diplomatic, and conflict-handling abilities are required for difficult and fast-paced situations and sensitive or confidential matters.
  • Excellent communication, public speaking, and presentation experience is required, including the ability to advocate professionally on issues.
  • Experience supporting, engaging with, and developing relationships with volunteers and donors is required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products is required.
  • Familiarity with shelter software, animal-management software, and Asana, or the ability and willingness to learn new online information systems, is required.
  • The applicant must have a valid driver's license and be eligible for Best Friends' vehicle insurance coverage.
  • The applicant must be able and willing to regularly travel to various locations on a flexible schedule.
  • The position requires working indoors and outdoors in varied weather conditions, working around cats and dogs and other animals, lifting up to 50 pounds, and performing extended periods of standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, climbing, twisting, crawling, and typing.
  • The position includes variable daily hours and days of the week, including weekends, nights, and holidays.
Responsibilities
  • Work onsite on rotation at all six Los Angeles Animal Services shelters for approximately three years in a leadership position to create systemic change and achieve project goals.
  • Consult directly on shelter and field lifesaving operations; plan, implement, facilitate, engage, monitor, and evaluate lifesaving programming and continuing education.
  • Evaluate proven strategies to achieve organizational goals and no-kill targets by scheduled deadlines.
  • Implement, communicate, and advise on the operations plan, including metrics, goals, success definitions, timestamps, and interim milestones.
  • Create and act on written recommendations to address program and partner gaps and collaborate with organizations outside the shelter system to achieve no-kill goals.
  • Work within the operations and Los Angeles Animal Services budgets to facilitate appropriate resources.
  • Identify additional support needs and coordinate with Best Friends staff to provide support for project success and sustainability.
  • Manage communications within the assigned agency and with stakeholders, ensuring teams, leaders, and stakeholders are regularly updated and delivering training to staff and volunteers.
  • Assist Los Angeles Animal Services leadership with creating, updating, and obtaining approval for standard operating procedures compliant with laws and ordinances.
  • Provide performance-management oversight for Best Friends staff and support job descriptions and training for Best Friends staff and volunteers.
  • Manage communications within Best Friends and keep leadership updated on progress, challenges, and lifesaving outcomes.
  • Work with the Executive Director to extend progress communications to other communities and Los Angeles Animal Services stakeholders.
  • Identify content, marketing, public-relations, communications, and development opportunities to showcase progress on local and national platforms.
  • Oversee data collection for key performance indicators and shelter programs, including shelter and field statistics, and update HERO and key performance indicators.
  • Build relationships in the Los Angeles Animal Services and broader Los Angeles communities to improve shelter awareness and image, grow local partnerships, increase Best Friends brand exposure, and improve shelter practices and outcomes.
  • Establish and track quantitative and qualitative success metrics aligned with mission impact and organizational priorities.
  • Collaborate with Los Angeles Animal Services teams and volunteers to communicate and implement strategic direction for the Los Angeles project.
  • Elevate programming stories and achievements for promotion and industry credibility and maintain interdepartmental and divisional relationships.
  • Provide thought leadership, strategy, business planning, and tactical guidance for the shared Los Angeles Animal Services plan and goals.
  • Monitor external changes in animal welfare and community support systems and work with leadership to support organizational objectives.
  • Build relationships with community partners, city officials, community members, and other stakeholders to create strategic partnerships and grow community participation.
  • Generate animal-welfare thought-leadership content topics for leadership and board communications, public relations, blogs, and social media.
