About the job

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, civil engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience applying finite element methods to product or structural engineering problems and translating requirements into appropriate analysis plans.
  • Proficiency with at least one commercial finite element analysis solver and its pre- and post-processing tools.
  • Strong understanding of solid mechanics, material behavior, structural dynamics, fatigue, numerical methods, meshing, boundary conditions, and solution strategies.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, material specifications, product requirements, and physical test data.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001 and experience supporting automotive quality-system requirements.
  • Ability to communicate technical information, collaborate across functions, manage competing priorities, and own deliverables.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute finite element analyses by building, solving, and interpreting linear and nonlinear models using appropriate materials, loads, constraints, contacts, connections, and mesh strategies.
  • Evaluate product performance by performing static strength, modal, dynamic, vibration, fatigue, thermal, buckling, contact, and durability analyses based on product and program needs.
  • Verify model accuracy using mesh convergence studies, sensitivity checks, hand calculations, and other verification methods to assess model quality and evaluate likely failure modes.
  • Partner with design engineers to evaluate geometry, materials, joints, welds, bolted connections, and load paths, and recommend improvements to performance, cost, and manufacturability.
  • Support test planning, compare simulation predictions with test results, and refine models to address meaningful differences.
  • Contribute to design reviews, failure investigations, root-cause analysis, and corrective actions.
  • Prepare reports and presentations documenting methods, assumptions, results, limitations, risks, and recommended actions while maintaining traceable analysis records.
  • Develop reusable modeling approaches, templates, and workflows, and automate repeatable tasks where appropriate.
  • Travel as needed to support design reviews, testing, manufacturing activities, and collaboration at other company locations.
Desired Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in a related engineering discipline.
  • Automotive or commercial vehicle experience, particularly with structural components, seating, mechanisms, durability, or vehicle interiors.
  • Experience with ANSYS, Abaqus, NASTRAN, LS-DYNA, OptiStruct, HyperMesh, or comparable platforms.
  • Experience with advanced analysis methods such as nonlinear materials, large deformation, complex contact, composites, welds, bolted joints, explicit dynamics, fracture mechanics, optimization, or probabilistic analysis.
  • Experience correlating simulations with strain-gage, modal, vibration, durability, or other physical test data.
  • Familiarity with CAD, product lifecycle management systems, IATF 16949, and VDA 6.3.
  • Scripting or workflow automation experience using Python, MATLAB, or solver-specific tools.

About the company

HSM is a privately held global manufacturer that started with coiled springs for furniture and bedding and expanded into vertical integration, including wire drawing and polyurethane foam. It serves transportation, packaging, and specialty manufacturing with end-to-end in-house processes that control the supply chain from raw materials to finished parts. It differentiates itself by offering multiple capabilities under one roof and growing through strategic acquisitions, such as entering bus seating with the C.E. White Company. Its goal is to be a reliable global partner that provides integrated, end-to-end manufacturing solutions and maintains steady, long-term relationships with industrial customers.

What believers are saying

  • VICTA Lite launched in 2026, targeting lighter transit seats and longer EV range.
  • Barberton, Ohio opened in June 2025, adding induction-tempered spring-wire capacity and 16-18 jobs.
  • HSM won Hickory's 2026 Legacy Award, strengthening local recruiting and customer credibility.

What critics are saying

  • Revelio showed HSM headcount fell to 1,460 in March 2026, signaling pressure.
  • Active job postings dropped 14.8% in 2026, and hiring velocity cooled to 22 monthly.
  • A failed VICTA Lite launch lets larger bus-seat rivals commoditize HSM Transportation.

What makes HSM unique

  • Since 1944, HSM vertically integrates wire, metal, seating, and automation in Hickory.
  • HSM exclusively manufactures C.E. White school-bus seats, controlling aftermarket parts and replacements.
  • Atlantic Automation's 2024 North Carolina expansion broadened HSM's engineered components platform.
