Requirements
  • Five years of experience as a commercial lines underwriter is required.
  • Knowledge of commercial lines underwriting policies, practices, and procedures; insurance law; underwriting marketing principles and techniques; rating plans and plan concepts; treaty and facultative reinsurance concepts; wholesale broker systems; regulatory issues; agency systems; market conditions; and company operations is required.
  • Ability to analyze insurance risks and determine acceptability, including policy language, commercial rating plans and methodologies, and reinsurance, is required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with individuals and groups through telephone, video conference, fax, email, and in person is required.
  • Demonstrated negotiation skills are required.
  • Ability to manage assigned lines of business, including monitoring aggregates, is required.
  • Ability to use or learn job-related computer software is required.
  • Ability to devise business solutions, implement appropriate solutions, and monitor their effectiveness is required.
  • Ability to make decisions with minimal supervision is required.
Responsibilities
  • Research market trends, competition, and market viability in partnership with a consultant or manager, and develop working partnerships with Actuarial, Finance, and Claims as appropriate.
  • Review individual risks with assigned brokers and accept or decline business based on the information needed to make the decision.
  • Analyze exposures to loss, develop adequate premium charges, determine endorsements and exclusions, and place reinsurance within department guidelines.
  • Achieve team and individual production and loss-ratio goals with assigned brokers through underwriting management and marketing.
  • Analyze premium and loss results by agency, state, and major class of business, assess the quality of broker submissions, and recommend corrective actions.
  • Handle policy maintenance and mid-term requests, review endorsement requests, process policy changes, review loss-control reports, make recommendations, follow up on outstanding information, and review claim activity.
  • Place reinsurance using treaty, semiautomatic, and facultative reinsurance facilities, and maintain relationships with reinsurers.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with brokers through frequent contact, resolve broker conflicts, and host visiting brokers as required.
  • Travel to broker offices for training or marketing visits as required.
  • Assist with marketing ideas and strategies for underwriting events and marketing campaigns.
  • Develop technical and business knowledge through internal and external venues.
  • Perform other assigned responsibilities.
Desired Qualifications
  • Excess and surplus lines experience is preferred.
  • Completion of general insurance courses such as Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter, Certified Insurance Counselor, Associate in Commercial Underwriting, Associate in Risk Management, Chartered Property and Casualty Insurance Woman, or Associate in Surplus Lines Insurance is preferred.
