About the Job

Requirements

  • Understand grounding, electromagnetic interference, and/or AC interference concepts, including field data gathering and troubleshooting.
  • Have experience with Canadian and/or U.S. standards, practices, and applicable legislation.
  • Demonstrate technical proficiency and attention to detail.
  • Have interpersonal, communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Show initiative, flexibility, and adaptability.
  • Have computer skills, especially Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and mapping tools such as Google Earth and AbaData.
  • Hold a university degree in an engineering discipline; electrical engineering with a background in electromagnetics, grounding, or interference is preferred.
  • Be licensed as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or eligible to obtain licensure; Engineer-in-Training or Professional Engineer candidates with relevant experience will be considered.
  • Have prior experience in AC interference mitigation; intermediate to senior engineers with 3–5+ years of experience are preferred.
  • Experience with SES CDEGS or comparable electromagnetic/grounding simulation software is highly desirable; candidates without direct CDEGS experience should demonstrate transferable modeling or simulation skills and aptitude to learn it.
  • This is not an entry-level position; some prior electrical, grounding, or electromagnetic interference experience is required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform AC interference modeling.
  • Design AC interference mitigation systems.
  • Conduct third-party reviews of reports and designs related to corrosion, cathodic protection, and AC interference.
  • Monitor and evaluate cathodic protection and AC interference systems.
  • Support clients’ Pipeline and Facility Safety Management Systems.
  • Model complex pipeline and powerline geometries using specialized computer software, including CDEGS, with extensive data input and analysis.
  • Design AC mitigation systems to reduce electrical shock risk to pipeline personnel and pipeline integrity risks such as coating damage and AC corrosion.
  • Assess cathodic protection and AC interference survey data.
  • Design AC and DC interference mitigation systems.
  • Review cathodic protection and AC interference designs, reports, and inspection and commissioning data as a third party.
  • Perform engineering calculations, including resistance, current distribution, and ground potential rise.
  • Coordinate engineering aspects of installing AC mitigation and cathodic protection systems.
  • Develop detailed designs and collaborate with drafting personnel to prepare design drawing packages.
  • Potentially conduct field work, including soil resistivity testing, structure potential measurements, right-of-way evaluations, and constructability assessments for AC mitigation and cathodic protection systems.
  • Prepare technical assessment and design reports, procedures, and specifications.
  • Support maintenance and updates to assessment criteria in accordance with evolving industry practices and stay current on emerging technologies.
  • Deliver accurate, timely, and cost-effective integrity services that meet client, company, industry, and regulatory standards.
  • Keep current on applicable pipeline and integrity codes and standards.
  • Participate in other integrity and pipeline engineering responsibilities and projects as needed.
  • Liaise with other divisions.
  • Comply with the company’s environmental, health, and safety program, with a focus on field safety.
  • Adhere to the company’s Engineering Quality System.
  • Establish and maintain positive client relationships.

Desired Qualifications

  • AMPP (NACE) certification and cathodic protection experience are assets.
  • Electrical engineering with a background in electromagnetics, grounding, or interference is preferred.
  • Intermediate to senior engineers with 3–5+ years of prior AC interference mitigation experience are preferred.
  • Experience with SES CDEGS software or comparable electromagnetic/grounding simulation software is highly desirable.
