About the company

Intel designs and manufactures semiconductor chips, with a focus on microprocessors for personal computers, servers, and other devices. Its core product is the CPU on a single silicon chip, which executes instructions, handles arithmetic and logic operations, and coordinates the work of other computer components. Intel originated in memory chips but shifted decisively to microprocessors in the 1980s, becoming a central supplier for the PC era after the IBM partnership and its famous x86 processor line. This shift, large-scale manufacturing, and close ties with computer makers set Intel apart from competitors who remained focused on memory or other components. The company aims to power computing by delivering high-performance, energy-efficient silicon solutions that drive a wide range of computing devices and applications.

Tech selloff wipes $1T off Nasdaq 100 as Intel plunges 30% on AI spending fears

Big Tech stocks fell sharply this week as investors worried that heavy spending on artificial intelligence (AI) won't pay off soon. The Nasdaq 100 dropped roughly 4%, wiping out more than $1 trillion in value, while the S&P 500 fell more than 2% on Friday afternoon. Intel's stock plunged more than 30% to roughly $62 after it gave a weak fourth-quarter outlook. ServiceNow fell 27% on Thursday after weaker-than-expected third-quarter results. Amazon, Alphabet and Meta also dropped after earnings; Amazon reported negative free cash flow of $42 billion. S&P 500 earnings growth has slipped to roughly 26% from 32% in the second quarter. Some investors are trimming tech gains to buy cheaper stocks elsewhere, though analysts such as Dan Ives remain optimistic about tech's long-term prospects.

Goldman cuts Intel target 33% to $100 as memory crunch hits PC demand

Intel chief executive Lip-Bu Tan warned of an "unprecedented memory crunch" hurting PC demand, as Goldman Sachs cut its price target for the chipmaker by 33.3%, from $150 to $100. The AI boom is pulling memory production towards server chips, leaving less for ordinary computers. Intel's client computing sales fell 9% from the previous quarter to $8.1 billion, and it expects the global PC market to shrink about 12% in units in 2026. Intel forecast fourth-quarter revenue of $15 billion to $16 billion, against Wall Street's expectation of roughly $17.1 billion. Goldman kept a Neutral rating, while Jefferies cut its target to $85 and Bank of America downgraded Intel to Neutral. Intel's chief financial officer does not expect memory supply to improve during 2027.

Intel warns PC shipments will fall 12% this year as AI squeezes memory and budgets

Intel warned investors that the PC market slowdown is sharpening, sending its shares down more than 28% on Friday. Dell, HP and Lenovo fell 10.7%, 9.6% and 7.4%, respectively. Intel expects worldwide PC shipments to fall about 12% this year and roughly 10% in 2027. It blamed memory chip shortages, driven by the AI data center boom, and tight business IT budgets strained by rising AI spending. Intel's chief financial officer, David Zinsner, still expects a PC "renaissance" as AI workloads shift to personal devices. Sales of Intel's AI-capable PC processors grew 35% in the third quarter, while its broader client computing revenue fell 5%. HP said AI PCs made up 46% of its unit shipments last quarter and expects 60% to 70% next year.

Intel stock crashes as AI memory crunch hits PC sales, wiping $12B off government's stake

Intel's stock crashed, wiping $12 billion from the value of the US government's stake in the chipmaker. The main problem is falling PC demand. The AI industry is absorbing memory and other components, which pushes up PC prices. "Our customers began signaling a PC slowdown based on the memory prices and availability," chief executive officer Lip-Bu Tan said on an earnings call. He added that higher system prices are straining already limited IT budgets. There was a bright spot: revenue from Intel's data centre business rose 78% from a year earlier. But growth is constrained until Intel adds fab capacity and wins more external customers, competing with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. One new Arizona fab is operational, but the next is not expected online until 2028.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 579 points, or 1.1%, and the S&P 500 dropped 1.8%. Amazon shares fell nearly 6% after third-quarter results missed Wall Street expectations. The company reported negative free cash flow of $42.4 billion and kept its 2026 capital spending forecast of $220 billion. Intel dropped more than 5% after it warned of slowing demand for personal computers. Advanced Micro Devices fell 11%, Broadcom 5%, and Nvidia 4%. Alphabet shares fell 1.2% on Thursday after its earnings report and kept sliding on Friday.
