  • A current full, unrestricted Registered Nursing license in Alaska or another U.S. state is required; direct hires must have applied for an Alaska nursing license before the start date, and agency staff must have an active Alaska license.
  • Basic Life Support certification is required until Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification is obtained.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support certification must be obtained within six months of hire and renewed biennially.
  • Clinical Competency is required within three months of hire and every three years thereafter.
  • Manager Competency is required within three months of hire and every three years thereafter.
  • Knowledge of nursing care principles, practices, diagnosis, and processes, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation, to provide professional nursing care to patients.
  • Knowledge of hospital and departmental policies and procedures to comply with and enforce their proper application.
  • Knowledge and skills in computer systems, including Microsoft Excel, Access, and Word.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and coordinate all staffing, supplies, and patient-care activities for the assigned departments on a 24-hour basis.
  • Oversee the overall financial performance of the assigned departments, set annual departmental budgets, use staff and other resources cost-effectively, and suggest alternatives for improving cost effectiveness.
  • Coordinate nursing-service orientation for new staff, monitor skills, and provide guidance for new-skill development.
  • Select and evaluate preceptors for new employees.
  • Make patient-care assignments based on individual patient-care requirements, assignment complexity, personnel categories, and qualifications.
  • Review staffing needs and recommend changes to staffing standards based on patient-classification and staff-utilization studies.
  • Revise, implement, and administer nursing-service and department-specific policies, procedures, and standards for the assigned clinical area.
  • Collaborate with other healthcare providers to arrange and conduct patient-care conferences.
  • Facilitate and participate in quality-improvement activities to monitor compliance with patient-care standards and identify areas for performance improvement.
  • Train and support staff career development for new responsibilities and authority.
  • Partner with the Education department and Human Resources to provide ongoing education, training, and competency validation.
  • Hold staff accountable for completing education, training, and competency validation by the due dates.
  • Update job descriptions and performance standards as required.
  • Evaluate staff performance against job descriptions and written performance standards.
  • Recommend awards, issue reprimands, and recommend adverse actions based on evaluated performance.
  • Communicate potential administrative concerns and unresolved employee or patient issues to the Chief Nursing Officer.
  • Oversee the planning, preparation, and approval of staffing schedules in accordance with personnel policies and regulations.
  • Approve employee leave.
  • Delegate assignments to appropriate staff members.
  • Coordinate nursing-service activities with other areas, departments, and divisions.
  • Set and approve agendas for department staff meetings.
  • Set annual departmental goals.
  • Oversee supply and equipment ordering for the department.
  • Identify departmental personnel, equipment, supply, and training needs and use the data for program planning with Nursing Service Administration.
  • Initiate discussions with the Chief Nursing Officer regarding area or department issues.
  • Complete required competencies, evaluations, and training by the due dates.
  • Implement regulatory-agency standards, including Joint Commission and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services standards, in the assigned departments.
  • Work with the Inpatient Care Coordinator to ensure compliance with payer and regulatory requirements.
  • Assume the role of Acting Chief Nursing Officer in the CNO’s absence, coordinate overall Nursing Service activities, and report directly to the Hospital Administrator in that function.
  • Fulfill assignments delegated by the Chief Nursing Officer during hospital emergency events and act rapidly and effectively in emergencies.
  • Attend and participate in at least 80% of Nurse Executive Committee meetings and apply the information presented.
  • Participate in Nursing Service goal setting.
  • Address employee concerns consistent with Human Resources policy.
  • Promote the organization’s Seven Standards of Excellence.
  • Follow the duties and responsibilities in the Registered Nurse position description for each assigned unit.
  • Step into patient-care roles as required by changing care needs in the assigned departments.
  • Perform duties independently, exercising professional judgment to determine the correct course of action.
  • Remain calm, react constructively, and make sound judgments in emergency and high-stress situations.
  • Address performance, behavioral, and quality-of-care issues when identified and escalate them to the appropriate administrator or leader as needed for resolution.
  • Provide positive feedback to staff who meet or exceed performance standards and recommend additional recognition of outstanding performance to administration as appropriate.
Desired Qualifications
  • A bachelor's or master's degree.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification for Obstetrics.
  • Oncology or Infusion nursing certification or course completion.
  • Five years of professional nursing experience.
  • A minimum of two years as a staff Registered Nurse in the assigned specialty unit.
  • One year of supervisory responsibilities.
