What believers are saying

  • Fee income avoids one-client dependence: StepStone's May 2026 filing shows no client above 5% of management and advisory fees.
  • Infrastructure investment capacity expanded: in August 2026, StepStone raised $1.7 billion for its secondaries fund and related accounts.
  • StepStone supports employees with education debt: its standing benefits include student loan repayment and parental leave coaching.

What critics are saying

  • Carry recipients face repayment risk: StepStone's employee profit-sharing awards include after-tax clawbacks when underlying performance fees reverse.

StepStone launches portfolio modelling tool drawing on data from 53,000 private markets funds

StepStone Group (Nasdaq: STEP), a global private markets investment firm, launched StepStone Total Portfolio Allocator, an interactive tool that shows how private markets fit alongside public market portfolios. It announced the product on October 14, 2026. The tool targets private wealth firms, advisors, family offices, small institutions, and defined contribution plan administrators. Users start with a public market risk profile, add private allocations across four asset classes, and compare hypothetical returns and volatility with a public-only portfolio. They can also test how portfolios would have fared in the Global Financial Crisis, COVID-19, and the 2022 rate shock. The tool draws on SPI by StepStone, which analyses data from more than 20,000 general partners, 53,000 funds, and 304,000 underlying investments.
