About the Job

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical discipline and at least 6 years of technical engineering experience coding in languages including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python, or equivalent experience.
  • Preferred: A bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical field and at least 10 years of technical engineering experience coding in languages including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python; or a master's degree in computer science or a related technical field and at least 8 years of technical engineering experience coding in those languages; or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with stakeholders to determine user requirements for scenarios, incorporate feedback into designs and solution fixes, and lead feedback loops measuring customer value, usage patterns, and other actionable metrics.
  • Lead architecture and design discussions; create architecture proposals and design documents; test hypotheses and proposed solutions; own design decisions; determine technologies and how they interact; oversee team members; and ensure system architecture meets security and compliance requirements.
  • Create and mentor others in testing plans and quality assurance; define test outcomes; select effective testing approaches; improve test suites and coverage; and integrate automation into testing plans.
  • Identify dependencies and develop design documents for products, applications, services, or platforms; determine cross-team and technology interactions and support responsibilities; assess back-end dependencies and upstream and downstream effects; drive security, performance, reliability, and dependency-chain improvements; coordinate across teams; and resolve conflicts.
  • Lead by example and mentor others to produce extensible, maintainable code; optimize, debug, refactor, and reuse code; identify coding best practices and patterns; provide expertise in coding and validation strategies; and use metrics to improve code quality and stability.
  • Apply debugging tools, logs, telemetry, and other methods to verify assumptions and resolve issues proactively and reactively; triangulate issues; debug solutions retrospectively; and identify root causes.
  • Review product code for quality, reliability, accuracy, and scale; participate in code reviews; apply feedback; and ensure diagnosability, reliability, maintainability, and adherence to coding best practices.
  • Use cross-product expertise and stakeholder input to drive project plans, release plans, and work items; break long-term project vision into milestones and roadmaps; guide project estimation; and escalate issues that may cause major delays.
  • Create and conduct experiments, monitor prototypes and tests, interpret results, decide next steps or whether to ship, and identify metrics to assess improvements in customer value.
  • Create implementation frameworks as needed, lead solution implementation and deployment within existing frameworks, maintain accountability for deployment impact, optimize deployments for business objectives, and ensure safe deployment.
  • Maintain live-service operations on a rotational on-call basis; implement and support mitigations for complex performance or functionality issues; review and write postmortems; and share insights with the team.
  • Serve as a Designated Responsible Individual, monitor systems for degradation, downtime, or interruptions, alert stakeholders and initiate restoration actions, develop incident-response playbooks, coordinate coverage across teams, respond within service-level agreement timeframes, plan for emerging issues, reduce incidents, and escalate to appropriate owners.
  • Integrate, design, and review instrumentation for telemetry covering performance, reliability, availability, usage, and safety; use telemetry feedback to inform designs; ensure scalability and financial responsibility; meet capture and storage guidelines; and create telemetry outputs such as notifications or dashboards.
  • Collect, classify, and analyze complex data and metrics, including system health and bug trends; refine products through analytics and use data integration to inform engineering decisions.
  • Enhance, reuse, contribute to, and identify software developer tools; use open-source tools when possible; develop expertise in relevant tools; identify internal tools and create new tools; evaluate whether methods remain applicable; and share best practices and teach others.
  • Apply automation comprehensively in production and deployment; run code in simulated or other non-production environments to verify functionality and error-free runtime; and develop standardized, repeatable, scalable solutions for quality.
  • Ensure security, privacy, safety, and accessibility processes are followed across solutions and teams; create evidence of product compliance; and understand compliance implications of onboarding new technologies.
  • Stay current with technical developments and adopt trends, solutions, and patterns that improve availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance; drive consistency in monitoring and operations at scale; and share knowledge with engineers.
  • Apply and share established and emerging engineering best practices; maintain an up-to-date understanding of applicable global and local regulations; and lead product development and scaling to meet customer requirements and performance expectations.
  • Identify key partners and maintain communication across the Microsoft engineering ecosystem; serve as a leadership contact to align expectations; build partner teams and understand their goals; support partner and customer needs through product development; and escalate complex blockers.
  • Embody the organization's culture and values.
