Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Must hold Certified Registered Central Service Technician certification through the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association or Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician certification through the Certified Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, or obtain one within 18 months of hire.
  • Must meet the Department of Labor medium-duty standard, exerting up to 50 pounds occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly.
  • Must be able to bend, stoop, and reach; perform normal rotation; and stand and walk for an 8–12-hour shift.
  • Must be capable of lifting up to 60 pounds and pushing loaded carts weighing more than 200 pounds.
  • Must be able to work in environments that may include high-pressure steam, chemical, electrical, mechanical, and bio-waste hazards, stress, back strain, and body fluids, with varying temperatures, noise, odors, and multiple stimuli.
  • Must wear personal protective equipment for extended periods.
  • Must be available for scheduling based on hospital operational needs.
  • Must complete annual education related to specialty accreditation, where required by the facility; training may include computer-based learning, training, in-services, and competency validation.
  • Must communicate and interact with guests tactfully and harmoniously.
  • Must be able to perform in emergency or stressful situations and work both as part of a team and independently.
Responsibilities
  • Provide prompt, accurate service in support of patient care.
  • Provide sterile linen packs, basins, instrument trays, and other sterile items.
  • Maintain accurate records of cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization processes.
  • Ensure consistency in the trays provided by the department.
  • Monitor and enforce controls to prevent cross-contamination according to infection-control policies.
  • Establish and maintain sterile-processing standards.
  • Implement changes as needed to remain current with regulations and recommended practices.
  • Review current practices for potential improvements in service quality.
  • Provide sterile-processing services to other departments.
