US title insurance premiums rose 13% in 2025, driven by increased mortgage refinancing activity, according to AM Best. Through the first quarter of 2026, direct premiums written climbed 18% compared to the prior year period. The sector recorded nearly $1 billion in underwriting gains in 2025 and $1.2 billion in net income. Commercial loan originations in late 2025 particularly contributed to premium growth. However, high mortgage rates and affordability pressures continue to constrain the housing market. Existing homeowners remain reluctant to refinance, keeping residential activity subdued. AM Best maintained its negative outlook on the title insurance segment earlier in 2026 but plans to reassess conditions for 2027. The company noted that despite economic headwinds, title insurers have demonstrated sector resilience through improved underwriting metrics.

Best's Market Segment Report reveals that AM Best-rated US property/casualty mutual insurers doubled their net income to $42.6 billion in 2025. This surge was driven by an underwriting gain of $14.8 billion, reversing a $7.2 billion loss in 2024. The improvement resulted from rate increases, restructured discounts, and higher deductibles implemented in preceding years. Investment income exceeded $20 billion in both years, supporting overall profitability. Despite a muted Atlantic hurricane season, the sector faced pressure from wildfires, floods, and severe storms. Policyholder dividends increased significantly, reaching $5.5 billion in first-quarter 2026 compared to $0.5 billion the previous year. Smaller mutuals typically outperform on loss ratios but face greater weather-related volatility than larger insurers with broader geographical risk spread.
Canada's property/casualty insurance sector maintains a stable outlook, supported by strong capitalisation, improved underwriting profitability, and steady investment returns, according to AM Best. The sector sustained profitability in 2025, bolstered by reduced catastrophe activity compared to the prior year. The industry's gross insurance revenue grew 5.6% to CAD 97.4 billion in 2025, whilst net revenue increased 6.0% to CAD 76.1 billion. Insurance service expenses decreased 6.3% to CAD 79.4 billion. However, challenges persist, including climate-related catastrophes and pressures in personal auto business from rising repair costs and vehicle theft. The sector's future profitability depends on leveraging technology and artificial intelligence whilst maintaining strong risk management practices. Canadian regulatory bodies continue providing prudent oversight, emphasising operational resilience, cyber security, and AI governance.
Canada's life and annuity insurers reported strong operating results in 2025, driven by favourable investment returns and growing sales supported by digitisation initiatives, according to AM Best's latest market report. The sector recorded year-over-year pre-tax and post-tax operating gains of 4% and 7% respectively. Insurance revenue grew modestly by just over 2% to CAD 102.8 billion. Total Canadian life insurance new annualised premium reached a record high of CAD 2.3 billion in 2025, primarily driven by whole life premiums, which grew 10%. Companies are increasingly applying artificial intelligence to accelerate underwriting decisions and streamline the sales process. International operations outpaced domestic growth, with European revenues up over 8% and Asian revenues growing nearly 18%. However, coverage gaps persist as existing policies fail to keep pace with inflation, including higher mortgages and salaries.
