Requirements
  • At least 6 years of progressive experience in software engineering, actuarial systems development, or insurance technology, with demonstrated technical leadership.
  • Hands-on mastery of Python and SQL, and fluency operating in AI-native workflows such as Claude Code, Cursor, or equivalent; must be able to write, review, and architect production code from day one.
  • Demonstrated experience building or significantly contributing to a rating engine, pricing system, or comparable rules- and calculation-driven service.
  • Track record of establishing testing frameworks and engineering quality practices in a production environment.
  • Strong system design capabilities, including API design, service architecture, separation of concerns, and building for extensibility.
  • Ability to translate between actuarial logic, product requirements, and engineering implementation.
  • Comfort operating in a regulated, multi-stakeholder environment where speed, rigor, and compliance must coexist.
Responsibilities
  • Design, build, and maintain internal Python-based pricing services and data models supporting actuarial and product teams across commercial lines.
  • Develop and enhance rating engine services that support multiple lines of business and enable extensible, account-level pricing.
  • Create product configuration services that allow product owners to safely update coverage options and pricing parameters.
  • Work approximately 30–40 percent in code and 60–70 percent in system design, architecture review, and pull-request review.
  • Establish engineering standards, design patterns, and reusable components that scale across lines of business.

  • Integrate and validate third-party data sources for pricing segmentation and predictive modeling.
  • Enable dislocation analysis across lines to support model development and implementation.
  • Occasionally build and deploy predictive models.
  • Partner with data science and actuarial teams to operationalize models within the rating infrastructure.
  • Lead a dotted-line squad of onshore and offshore developers in an agile delivery model, keeping the squad on task.
  • Set sprint priorities, unblock dependencies, and drive delivery cadence across squad members who formally report to other managers.
  • Provide technical direction through code review, architectural guidance, and active mentorship.
  • Establish working agreements, intake discipline, and prioritization frameworks that protect squad capacity from ad hoc demand.
  • Partner with offshore people managers to provide input on squad members' performance, growth, and retention.
  • Collaborate with implementation teams across commercial insurance to develop standardized patterns and scalable solutions.
  • Partner with actuarial, platform engineering, and implementation teams to align on requirements, sequencing, and delivery.
Desired Qualifications
  • P&C insurance background with exposure to commercial lines.
  • Familiarity with filed rating plans, rating bureau frameworks such as ISO and NCCI, or actuarial pricing concepts.
  • Experience with Databricks, Snowflake, or comparable cloud data platforms.
  • Experience with Duck Creek, Guidewire, or similar policy administration platforms.
  • Exposure to predictive modeling workflows and integrating models into production pricing systems.
  • Experience building engineering functions or technical capabilities from an existing codebase.
  • Background in financial services or other regulated technology environments, with aptitude and willingness to learn the commercial insurance domain.

Travelers and Chubb keep 16 cents of every premium dollar, backed by $272B in investments

Travelers and Chubb keep about 16 cents or more of every premium dollar as underwriting profit, making them appealing to growth-minded investors. Travelers posted an underlying combined ratio of 84.1% in the third quarter of 2026. Chubb's ratio was 81.3% in the US, 86.4% abroad, and 80.7% in reinsurance. A ratio below 100% signals a profit. Premiums are paid up front and claims later, so insurers can invest the "float" in between. Travelers' portfolio is worth $100 billion and Chubb's $172 billion. Travelers earned nearly $1.1 billion in investment income in the second quarter, and Chubb more than $1.7 billion. Both trade above their five-year average price-to-book ratios, and each yields just over 1%, so value and income investors may look elsewhere.

Chubb shares up 105% in five years: is the $357.75 price still undervalued?

Chubb shares have returned 105.5% over the past five years, and the stock now trades at $357.75 and 12.3 times earnings. An Excess Returns analysis by Simply Wall St asks whether the insurer's returns on capital justify that price. The model uses a book value of $195.45 per share and a stable earnings estimate of $30.40 per share, based on forecasts from 12 analysts. It puts the excess return at $14.57 per share, with average return on equity of 13.56%. Chubb Wealth recently partnered with Hamilton Lane to widen access to private market investments in Hong Kong. That may add fee income and options for deploying capital. Chubb reported record adjusted net investment income of $1.88 billion on a $175 billion invested asset base.

Vaultik partners with Chubb to offer AI-powered watch and jewellery authentication, valuation and insurance

Vaultik has partnered with Chubb to streamline the process of authenticating, valuing, and insuring watches and jewellery. Through Vaultik's platform, owners can photograph their items and receive AI-powered authentication and valuation results, reviewed by experts at Birmingham Assay Office. Eligible customers can then request insurance quotes from Chubb and purchase coverage digitally within the same application. The collaboration addresses a traditionally fragmented process that typically requires separate appointments for appraisal and insurance. The service is available through Vaultik's Collect App and can be offered by retailers, jewellers, and marketplace sellers. Vaultik currently partners with WhatNot and eBay Live. Vaultik's KYP protocol generates authentication and valuation outputs from photographs, whilst Birmingham Assay Office provides specialist review. Chubb underwrites the insurance coverage for eligible items.
