About the job

Requirements
  • At least 12 years of brand and performance marketing experience, including meaningful time at VP level or equivalent, owning brand strategy, integrated campaign development, paid media and growth, and a multidisciplinary marketing function end-to-end including social, partnerships, communications, and performance/growth marketing, or a combination thereof.
  • Experience owning performance marketing and paid media at scale, with fluency in customer acquisition cost, lifetime value, return on ad spend, attribution, media-mix decisions, and how performance and brand reinforce one another across the funnel.
  • Experience setting brand strategy with measurable, multiyear impact on brand awareness, consideration, and customer trust, and communicating that impact in business terms.
  • A track record of building high-performance teams and developing leaders who lead others.
  • Strong creative instincts and experience partnering effectively with a creative team, providing effective briefs and feedback that improves work without diluting the vision.
  • Experience as a cross-functional leader who influences without authority and earns trust across Marketing, Creative, Product, and Customer Experience; comfort in board-level and executive conversations; and a business perspective in addition to a brand perspective.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and directly, from presenting brand strategy to an SVP to briefing a creative team.
  • Experience in fashion, retail, lifestyle, or direct-to-consumer, with understanding of the relationship between product, brand perception, and customer loyalty, and an understanding of the Rent the Runway customer.
Responsibilities
  • Set Rent the Runway's brand strategy and long-term positioning, defining messaging architecture, seasonal and multiyear narrative, and brand voice across channels, moments, and customer segments.
  • Lead the Brand Marketing function, set a high bar for output, develop leaders and next-generation leaders, and establish the operating model and standards for how the function plans, briefs, measures, and iterates in service of the broader Customer organization.
  • Own the brand and performance marketing budget, make strategic investment decisions, prioritize programs by brand and return-on-investment impact, track spending against plan, and make the case for brand and performance investment to executive leadership using data and narrative.
  • Lead integrated campaign development from brief through launch, own the seasonal narrative, drive cross-functional alignment, and ensure campaigns are grounded in brand strategy and connected across channels.
  • Lead the Social & Creators function, setting the strategic direction for the brand's presence on social platforms and within the creator economy and integrating social execution with brand strategy.
  • Manage the Performance Marketing function, owning paid acquisition, retention/customer relationship management, and growth across search, social, affiliate, and lifecycle channels, and integrating performance execution with brand strategy.
  • Lead brand partnerships and editorial programming; develop co-marketing and partnership strategies that expand reach and reinforce brand positioning in fashion, lifestyle, and culture, especially through channels and partners relevant to the next generation of customers.
  • Guide Public Relations and Communications to build earned presence and align the brand narrative with press and earned media strategy across paid, owned, and earned channels.
  • Partner with the Head of Creative and creative team to translate brand strategy into visually compelling, on-brief creative through mutual accountability.
  • Own brand and performance measurement; define and track awareness, consideration, sentiment, and mid-funnel engagement, as well as customer acquisition cost, return on ad spend, lifetime value, and marketing-driven revenue; and translate data into strategic adjustments.
  • Represent the brand in cross-functional conversations about product, pricing, artificial intelligence strategy, and customer experience, and ensure brand considerations are protected across the organization.

About the company

Rent the Runway enables people to rent designer clothing and accessories instead of buying them. It offers membership plans that let customers borrow a certain number of items per month (or swap unlimited items) and also provides one-time rentals for special occasions. Customers browse items online, reserve what they want, and the company handles shipping and dry cleaning, making the process easy. The service works by giving access to a rotating wardrobe at a fraction of retail prices, with logistics managed by Rent the Runway. It differentiates itself by combining a subscription model with a large selection of high-end brands and convenient maintenance, positioned within the growing sharing economy and sustainability trend. The goal is to provide affordable, flexible, and sustainable access to fashion, reducing the need to buy new clothes and cutting down waste.

Rent the Runway secures $15M rights offering with backstop from largest investors

Rent the Runway has secured a $15 million rights offering backstopped by its largest investors. The fashion rental company entered into an agreement on 11 September 2026 with CHS US Investments, Gateway Runway and S3 RR Aggregator, which will purchase any unsubscribed shares. Under the arrangement, existing Class A shareholders will receive transferable subscription rights to buy shares at a price equal to the greater of $3.55 or the 15-day volume-weighted average price through the record date. CHS will backstop 70% of the offering, with Gateway and S3 each covering 15%. The backstop ensures Rent the Runway receives the full $15 million regardless of shareholder participation. The company said the capital raise aims to strengthen its financial position and flexibility.

Rent the Runway eyes turnaround under new owners after $1.1B accumulated deficit

Rent the Runway is undergoing a strategic overhaul under new ownership after accumulating a $1.1 billion deficit since its founding. The company was recapitalised last year by Story3 Capital and other investors, who see opportunity in the established brand despite past losses. Managing partner Peter Comisar noted the firm inherited 17 years of brand-building and customer trust. Interim chief executive Teri Bariquit is refocusing on the company's original event-rental business, which had been neglected as subscription services grew. The company posted revenues of $329.8 million last year, up 7.7 percent, with 143,558 active subscribers and net earnings of $22.6 million. Bariquit is exploring new revenue models including revenue-sharing with brands and leveraging the company's dry-cleaning infrastructure to handle returns for fashion partners. A permanent chief executive search is underway.
