Requirements

An Associate’s Degree in Chemical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, Medical Technology, or an equivalent field is required.
The employee must be licensed in the State of Florida at the technologist level.
One or more licenses in Microbiology, Immunohematology, or another relevant laboratory area are required.
The position requires turning, stooping, bending, stretching, walking, and standing.
The position requires lifting an average of 10 pounds and occasionally carrying objects up to 20 pounds.
The position requires the ability to file, move records, laboratory supplies, and equipment.
Communication using spoken, written, and typed language is required.
The position requires finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination to operate a computer keyboard at a moderate skill level.
The employee must work at a fast pace, prioritize multiple assignments, respond to numerous requests, resolve conflicts among staff, collaborate with department leadership and healthcare staff, ensure operational efficiency, solve problems, and make decisions.
The employee must use personal protective equipment and follow Standard Precautions because of potential exposure to biohazardous or infectious agents.
The employee must protect confidential patient demographics, conditions, laboratory results, medical records, and physician orders, limiting access to what is reasonably necessary for laboratory testing.
The employee must comply with the annual influenza vaccination program or obtain an approved exemption.
Employment offers are followed by testing for controlled substances.

Responsibilities

Conduct quality laboratory testing and report results.
Ensure results are reported in compliance with department and hospital goals and standards and applicable accrediting organizations, including the Agency for Health Care Administration, Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, Commission on Laboratory Accreditation, and Joint Commission accreditation requirements.
Accurately identify each patient specimen and testing order and ensure results are accurate and reported in a timely manner.
Ensure specimen integrity and identification and resolve specimens that do not meet testing criteria.
Identify and resolve pending specimen results from the laboratory information system for assigned departments.
Report pertinent information to physicians, patient care areas, or supervisors, including panic values, instrument malfunctions, testing delays, and reagent or supply depletion.
Record dates opened and expiration dates and use reagents and controls only through their expiration dates.
Maintain the cleanliness, organization, and stock of the work area.
Follow troubleshooting procedures to correct deficiencies or problems with instruments and equipment.
Ensure instrument operation and result reliability and perform assigned or required maintenance checks, startups, and shutdowns.
Answer the telephone, greet customers, and provide consultation and technical support to physicians, phlebotomists, and nursing staff.
Follow quality control policy and ensure controls are within acceptable limits before reporting patient results.
Document quality control and out-of-range results appropriately.
Work variable night shifts, with availability Monday through Friday and on rotating weekends and holidays.
Float between Saint Lucie West Medical Center and Tradition Hospital as needed.

Desired Qualifications

A Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, or Medical Technology is preferred.
American Society for Clinical Pathology certification is preferred.
One year of clinical experience is preferred.
Licenses in Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, Blood Bank or Transfusion Medicine, and/or Serology are preferred.

As a Medical Technologist, you will perform and interpret tests at allcomplexitylevels. Using your understanding of the theories and technical,proceduraland problem-solving aspects of Laboratory Science, you will aid in the search todeterminethe best mode of care for patients. This position offers a rewarding opportunity to expand your knowledge through extensive hands-on experience with some of the best researchers and specialists.

We will hire our clinical laboratory testing personnel in three different job titles, based on educational background:

Medical Technologist

Med Lab Technician

Lab Technician

A PRN caregiver in this position works variable shifts from 9:00PM – 7:30AM or 10:00PM – 6:30M.Availability Monday-Friday and rotating weekends and holidays isrequired.

Floating between St. Lucie West and Tradition Hospital will berequired, as needed.

A caregiver who excels in this role, will:

Conduct quality laboratory testing and result reporting.

Ensure that results are reported in compliance with the goals and standards of the department,hospitaland applicable accrediting organizations (AHCA, CLIA, COLA, and JCAHO).

Accuratelyidentifyeachpatientspecimen and testing orders and ensure results areaccurateand reportedin a timely manner.

Ensure specimen integrity and identification and resolve specimens not meeting testing criteria.

Identifyand resolve pending specimen results from laboratory informationsystemfor assigned departments.

Physical Requirements:

This position involves turning, stooping, bending, stretching, walking and standing.

Sitting for short periods of time, the ability to file, move records, laboratory supplies, and equipment are also required physical duties.
Communication by means of the spoken, written and typed word is required.
Work requires finger dexterity and eye hand coordination to operate a computer keyboard at a moderate skill level.
Mental Demands: Ability to work at a fast pace and to prioritize multiple assignments/projects and respond to numerous requests; ability to resolve conflicts among staff and to work collaboratively with department director, physicians and other members of the healthcare team; ability to ensure operational efficiency; ability to problem solve and make decisions; ability to exercise self-control and tolerate stress when dealing with multiple requests and/or conflicting demands from multiple customers.
Special Demands: Use of personal protective equipment is required as there is a potential for exposure to biohazardous or infectious agents when drawing and processing specimens.
Confidentiality: The employee has access to the entire medical record for the purpose of charting and correcting laboratory results AND review of physician orders.
The access is limited to the amount reasonably necessary to achieve the purpose of the laboratory testing request.
The disclosure or requests that occur on a routine or recurring basis include patient demographics, condition and laboratory results.
