About the company

Rivian designs and builds electric pickup trucks, SUVs, and delivery vans, pairing off-road ability with electronics and software it develops itself. In 2021, its R1T became the first fully electric pickup truck on the US consumer market, ahead of larger rivals such as Ford and Tesla. It makes the R1T pickup, the R1S and R2 SUVs, and commercial vans in Normal, Illinois, and sells them directly online and in its own stores rather than through dealers. Its vehicles run on Rivian's own software, which gains features through updates sent over the internet, and most revenue comes from vehicle sales, with service and optional software adding more. Rivian was founded in 2009 and is based in Irvine, California.

What critics are saying

  • Stock grants have shrunk: Rivian shares fell 27% from January to October 2026, versus Tesla's 17% drop.

What makes Rivian unique

  • Volkswagen buys its tech: joint-venture work for VW, Rivian's largest owner, brought in $308 million in the June 2026 quarter.
  • Amazon is its anchor customer: it ordered 100,000 custom Rivian delivery vans, and over 40,000 ran its routes by mid-2026.
  • Unlike Tesla, Rivian adds lidar: in December 2025 it unveiled its own RAP1 self-driving chip and laser sensors for R2.

Rivian buys UK AI startup Third Dimension, which raised $7M, to speed up self-driving development

Rivian has acquired UK startup Third Dimension, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) to turn images and videos into realistic three-dimensional worlds. The deal terms were not disclosed. Rivian plans to use the technology to speed up development of driver-assistance systems and an autonomous driving system for robotaxis it plans to supply to Uber. Third Dimension's 15-person team, mostly based in the UK, will join Rivian's autonomous driving and AI team led by James Philbin. The deal could also help Rivian expand its London AI hub. Founded in 2024 by Tolga Kart and Piotr Sokolski, the startup raised $7 million in seed funding from Abstract Ventures, MVP, Soma Capital, and Solari Capital. It first aimed to speed up video game development. Combined with Rivian's data, which includes more than 400,000 data sequences daily from customers' vehicles, the technology could model rare road scenarios.

Rivian stock falls 17.7% as R2 ramp tests path to car profit after $36M gross loss

Rivian Automotive (RIVN) reported record third-quarter deliveries on October 2, 2026, after launching its cheaper R2 SUV. Even so, the stock fell 17.7% from September 22 to October 21, while the S&P 500 was about flat. Rivian's car business posted a gross loss of $36 million in the June quarter, down from $335 million a year earlier. Its software and services unit earned a $215 million gross profit, and management expects R2 to turn gross profit positive as 2026 ends. Free cash flow was negative $3.49 billion over the last four quarters, against $5.31 billion in cash and short-term investments at the end of June. Rivian raised about $1.3 billion through a share sale in July. Management warned the R2 ramp will weigh on third-quarter gross profit. Rivian reports results on October 29, 2026.

Rivian rises to #2 US EV Brand, surpassing Chevy as most automakers see sales decline.

Rivian rises to #2 US EV Brand, surpassing Chevy as most automakers see sales decline. Rivian has climbed from 10th to 2nd place among US electric vehicle brands, overtaking Chevy according to the latest Cox Automotive Q3 sales report. This shift comes as most automakers report declining EV sales, with only a handful of brands showing growth. Rivian's Rapid Ascent in the US EV Market. Rivian is now the second-largest EV brand in the United States, moving up from 10th place last year. The company has surpassed Chevy, which previously held the #2 spot. This change highlights Rivian's significant growth at a time when many automakers are seeing a downturn in electric vehicle sales. According to Cox Automotive's Q3 sales report, nearly every major brand experienced a decrease in EV sales during the quarter. However, Rivian, along with Mercedes, Lexus, Toyota, and Subaru, bucked the trend and posted sales increases. New models drive growth for select brands. Several brands have introduced new or updated electric models that contributed to their sales growth. Toyota has launched its improved bZ and new C-HR, Lexus introduced the new ES, Subaru added the Trailseeker and Uncharted, and Mercedes released the CLA. Rivian's growth is linked to the launch of its R2, a smaller and more affordable alternative to the R1S. Rivian began sales of the R2 a few months ago and booked 3,456 units in Q3. The R2's sticker price is significantly lower than the R1S, which is priced at about $80,000 (~AUD 114,604). Rivian plans to offer lower-end R2 models at approximately $50,000 (~AUD 71,627). Tesla remains on top, but Rivian gains ground. The Tesla Model Y continues to be the best-selling EV in the US, though Tesla's overall EV sales dropped nearly 20% year over year. Despite this decline, Tesla still leads the market by a wide margin. Rivian now holds the second spot in US EV sales, selling more electric vehicles in Q3 than any brand except Tesla. Notably, the number of R2 units Rivian booked in Q3 was fewer than the number of R1S units sold, indicating potential for further growth as R2 production ramps up. Chevy's changing position. Chevy, which previously held the #2 position, has seen its ranking fall. The brand offers the newly-improved and affordable Chevy Bolt, but the model is set to be cancelled next year. Why this matters. Rivian's rise to the #2 spot among US EV brands demonstrates that growth is possible even as much of the industry faces headwinds. The success of new models like the R2 shows that consumer interest in electric vehicles remains strong when affordable and appealing options are available. This shift also highlights the impact of product strategy and model availability on brand performance in the evolving US EV market. What this means for buyers. Buyers interested in electric vehicles now have more choices as brands like Rivian expand their lineups. With the introduction of the more affordable R2, Rivian is positioned to attract a broader range of customers. Those considering a Chevy Bolt should be aware of its upcoming cancellation and plan accordingly. Key specs. * Rivian R2 Q3 2026 Units Booked: 3,456 * Rivian R1S Sticker Price: $80,000 (~AUD 114,604) * Planned Lower-End R2 Price: $50,000 (~AUD 71,627) * Rivian US EV Brand Ranking: 2nd (up from 10th last year) * Tesla Model Y: Best-selling EV in the US * Tesla Year-over-Year Sales Change: Down nearly 20% Sharing is caring. Rivian stock hits 12-month low at $12.34, down 30.5% in three months, as R2 launch weighs on car margins

Rivian Automotive shares fell 30.5% over the three months to October 19, 2026, while the S&P 500 rose 2.7%. At $12.34, the stock closed at its lowest level in a year, 45% below its December high. It trades at 2.8 times sales. Gross margin turned positive at 7.5% over the twelve months to June 2026, but second-quarter profit came from software and services ($215 million), while the automotive business lost $36 million at the gross level. Analysts expect third-quarter revenue of about $2.02 billion, up from $1.66 billion in the second. Management has warned that a new vehicle launch will hurt automotive gross profit, and that $164 million of first-half regulatory credits will not recur. Rivian is due to report around October 29. The stock fell 11.5% and 8.8% after its last two reports.
